KVUE is the local Austin, Texas-based ABC affiliate, owned by Belo Corporation. Its transmitter is located in Austin.
It began broadcasting on UHF channel 24 in 1971 as a full-time ABC affiliate, inherited from KTBC. KVUE, along with NBC affiliate KXAN, are the only stations to keep the same network affiliations, unaffected by the numerous network changes in 1995 and 2006. The station airs on cable channel 3 on most cable systems in the Austin area.
KVUE was at one time owned by Gannett between 1986 (when it was acquired as part of Gannett's purchase of the Detroit News Association and its subsidiary Universal Communications) and 1999. This was when Belo was establishing a Texas based news network partnership with KHOU in Houston, WFAA in Dallas-Fort Worth and KENS in San Antonio upon the creation of a 24-hour cable news network called TXCN -- and when Belo was looking to add KVUE to that partnership, it decided to swap KXTV in Sacramento for KVUE with Gannett.
Before the KVUE of today existed, the calls were originally used on a now-defunct television station in Sacramento, California which broadcasted on channel 40; that same channel today is used by Fox affiliate KTXL.
