Lady Southern Cross
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Lady Southern Cross was a Lockheed Altair monoplane owned by Australian pioneer aviator Sir Charles Kingsford Smith.
In this aircraft, Kingsford Smith made the first eastward trans-Pacific flight from Australia to the United States of America, in October and November of 1934.
Kingsford Smith and co-pilot Tommy Pethybridge were attempting to break the England-Australia speed record in the Lady Southern Cross when they disappeared over the Andaman Sea on the 8th of November 1935. The only wreckage ever found was one landing gear strut from the Lady Southern Cross, discovered by Burmese fishermen 18 months later.
