[edit] Ship/submarine name

Is the ship named Silvanus or Sylvanus? Sylvanus is the name of a Greek god and the ship did have some Greek lettering on it.

On the US DVD release, the name is written in English as "Silvana", and the English dub pronounces it as Silvana. There are scenes in the show itself which have the name "Silverna". The Greek lettering is actually English written in the Greek alphabet - epsilon-alpha-sigma-tau for east, for example. --OmegaPaladin 10:31, 8 January 2006 (UTC)

The insignia patch from the Last Exile convention in Tokyo says that the ship's name is "Silvana". I believe the picture set from the con was on DVD 6 or 7. --Keno 03:43, 27 June 2006 (UTC)
So it is "Silvana" with a single "n"? I've modified the article to replace all the "Silvanna"s, but I'm not sure it is correct. -- Gwern (contribs) 00:11, 13 September 2006 (UTC)
I think your right, as long as its uniform Cpuwhiz11 01:10, 13 September 2006 (UTC)
Just a note to OmegaPaladin that not all the scenes are in english with greek lettering. If you look at the diagram of the Irbanis that Tatiana shows to the crew of the Silvana before their battle:[1], all the text is in actual greek. For example, the front of the ship is labeled Κριός which is greek for "ram". I'm willing to bet that most of the floating text in the Guild ship that Dio starts out in is greek as well.Ziiv 01:24, 29 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] English or Japanese?

This may seem obvious to some, but shall we use the defined English names, or the phonetic Japanese? eg. Disith/Dysis —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Nukleon (talkcontribs).

I can't seem to find the MoS article for it, but I believe that an available English-version name goes first and then one can also mention the original Japanese name. -- Ned Scott 01:50, 6 March 2006 (UTC)
That's how I remember it as well, since it is commercially released in America, we go with the commercial names (such as for the characters, vessels, series name, etc.) -- Gwern (contribs) 01:27, 13 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Alex and Maestro

I don't think Alex actually strangles Delphine, I'm pretty sure that sound you hear in the anime is him breaking her neck, which makes sense, he's a pretty strong guy and her neck is pretty slender... --GreatMizuti 12:53, 22 April 2006 (UTC)

I think you're right, and he does snap her neck... while strangling her. I think the way that Alex went about doing it falls within the scope of strangulation. --Miss Ethereal 18:51, 22 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Mullin

I don't believe any time in the series was it said that Mullin married Dunya so I clarified that and some other things. Also I think we should have a biography on Dunya herself, which I might do if no objects. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Cpuwhiz11 (talkcontribs).

[edit] Old Dunya biography

Note I found a biography of Dunya, but it had been removed. Granted she is not exactly a main character but she belongs somewhere on the page. Thoughts? Cpuwhiz11 15:49, 21 August 2006 (UTC)

I think there should be a biography on Dunya. If there's one for Vincent, there should be one for Dunya. Maybe there should be a minor characters section. Should there be a Plot section as well? I was surprised when there was no explanation of what Exile is, history of the nations, etc. --Adolon 02:10, 24 August 2006 (UTC)
Thirded. -- Gwern (contribs) 01:27, 13 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Proposal

Here is what I propose, we remove the "Major characters" title and simply call it "Characters", then we put in all the minor characters (Dunya, Godwin, Gale, Marius, and others ) with pictures (I will try to get some), after that we do a plot section (I will start it tomorrow as I am a big fan of Last Exile) and then top it off with a background section. It sounds lofty, but I think we can do it. Also what are your thoughts on my title renaming. Cpuwhiz11 03:09, 24 August 2006 (UTC)

I agree with everything wholeheartedly. I tried my best to find pictures of the characters but the sizes of the pictures are different and conflict with the other pictures. --Adolon 04:01, 24 August 2006 (UTC)
I started on the plot, but the work is slow so I will do a few a day. --Cpuwhiz11 16:23, 24 August 2006 (UTC)
I changed "Major characters" title to "Characters" and put in the old Dunya bio, which I actually did a while ago, but under an IP address. --Cpuwhiz11 16:51, 24 August 2006 (UTC)
OK, I am almost done with the plot bit. I did see the message on the main page and even though I prefer in-universe I will attempt to do it out-of-universe. I would like others help though so if you can add anything please do. Finally can we request this article to be re-rated somehow ? I think it deserves a notch up for the plot section.

--Cpuwhiz11 00:52, 1 September 2006 (UTC)

OK, I finished the plot section. What do you all think about the work I did, be honest and brutal. --Cpuwhiz11 00:02, 3 September 2006 (UTC)
It's pretty good. I like it. Grammar needs improvement, but that goes for just about everything on Wikipedia. --maru (talk) contribs 01:34, 3 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Lucciola's death

"It is unclear whether he believed that she would help Dio, or whether he knew that he couldn't win against her and accepted his final fate."  : At some moment Lucciola states that Dio and Delphine are everything to him. Thus fighting Delphine was not an option. He sacrifised himself hoping that she would consider his last wish and grant Dio freedom. Olmer 23:21, 11 October 2006 (UTC)

Luciola is male. --212.139.218.8 23:40, 16 February 2007 (UTC)
That's right. The "She"s are refering to Delphine. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Ziiv (talkcontribs) 18:57, 18 February 2007 (UTC).

It seemed to me that Lucciola and his kind were bred from birth to be The Guilds servant class, probably through the use of some sort of bio-engineering.It's possible that he was programmed somehow to be incapable of harming a high ranking Guild member.Wentt2125 07:02, 24 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Plot summary needs fixing.

The article "plot summary" isn't a summary at all it is like going through every single episode meticulously. I suggest a total re-write, for a more condensed version.

I would oppose a rewrite as I prefer the summary the way it is, as it helps explain a complex anime better then a condensed summary would. This having been said is their a Wikipedia guideline to follow in relation to this? Cpuwhiz11 11:28, 23 October 2006 (UTC)
Ditto. Any rewrite should focus on improving its quality, not on removing it - it's still a summary if it is shorter than the original. --Gwern (contribs) 15:10, 23 October 2006 (UTC)

I think that this article needs somebody to take a weed-whacker to it. A Summary should be just that a Summary, something to tell readers the rough gist of the story, not explain it in detail. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 220.233.85.90 (talkcontribs).

I once more oppose "a striping down" of the plot summary, as I feel it is important to helping people to understand the complex story. Cpuwhiz11 00:07, 9 November 2006 (UTC)
If I want to understand the "complex story," I'll BUY THE SERIES. Seriously, this is like a crazed fansite. A plot summery shouldn't be a step-by-step walkthrough of the entire thing. In my case, I wanted to find out more about it (recommendation) but this is just too detailed. I wanted something to catch my interest, not make me think "oh, I guess I won't rent it after all. I can just read THE ENTIRE FREAKIN' STORY ON WIKIPEDIA." —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 130.111.16.108 (talk • contribs).
I agree that the plot section is much to large. If you look at other anime articles such as Gundam Wing, Kanon or Fate/stay night's plot section, it is a very condensed version of the story. None of those pages contains a step-by-step walkthrough of the entire series.

[edit] Contradicting

Here's a short sentence taken from Mullin's description: "The operation ends with Mullin taking the unit back, but being gravely wounded in the process, believed dead. The epilogue shows that he survived to be with Dunya and live on a farm alongside Dunya's siblings and some friends from the Silvana."

Next is from Dunya's: "No more reference is made to Dunya until the last episode where she is seen getting the message Lavie and Claus' fathers were supposed to have delivered over their new grave. She is then seen in the closing scene in a motherly fashion and appears to have married Mullin though this is unconfirmed."

Is it just me or does the article seem to contradict itself? I'm going to change it a bit. Also, in the trivia section it says "Yuris" but over in the Alex section it says "Euris". Going to correct it again.

Nice catches and may I be the first to say, good sleuthing. Cpuwhiz11 00:14, 1 December 2006 (UTC)

I don't see any contradiction. What are you talking about? After Mullin captures the unit, Dunya walks in and sees his body covered in blood and slumped over one of the levers, then leaves and cries. The next time she's shown she's accepting Claus and Lavie's message tube. Then after that she's shown on the farm with everyone else including Mullin, and according to an unconfirmed "reference" in the bottom of the page, the child Mullin is shown carrying is Dunya's brother. Ziiv 08:59, 3 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Not all the text is English

This page got me so confused. I've been trying for the last few days to figure out what the heck all the greek writing means, thinking it was just english written with greek letters like this page said it was, only to find out that alot of it is actually greek. There are some things that are english (such as the directions on the compases in the vanships) but I'm willing to bet that most of the text is greek.

Here's an example from episode 12:[2]

All the text in that diagram is greek. For example, the front of the ship is labled "Κριός" (Krios) which translates to "Ram" according to babelfish.Ziiv 10:27, 29 December 2006 (UTC)

I was confused about the greek to but if you want some translations this site has a lot of them. [3] Cpuwhiz11 01:27, 30 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Downgrade

I've downgraded this article's quality rating because, at present, it's basically just a 62kb plot summary. It needs to have the episode summaries split into a sub-article at the very least, and to generally be brought into rough compliance with the guidelines at WP:ANIME. No hard feelings, I hope. --tjstrf talk 09:18, 12 January 2007 (UTC)

Plot Summary section moved to Last Exile Plot Summary, and a link has been provided. - Mintchocolatebear 01:59, 20 January 2007 (UTC)
We do need something to fill the blank space though, its rather odd to have a section devoted to linking to another article. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Sir LoseALot (talkcontribs) 23:15, 23 January 2007 (UTC).

[edit] Luft?

According to the trivia section: episode 2 'Luft Vanship' is not based on a chess term. But a search on wikipedia reveals that: "Luft, the German word for "air" (sometimes also "space" or "breath"), is used by some chess writers and commentators to denote a space left by a pawn move into which a castled king may move, especially such a space made with the intention of avoiding a back-rank mate. A move leaving such a space is often said to "give the king some luft"." I don't know how it applies to the episode, since its been a while since i've actually watched last exile, so i'm hesitant to change it, but Luft is apparently a chess term. Sir LoseALot 22:51, 23 January 2007 (UTC)

I've updated the "Episode list" and "Trivia" sections. :-) Mintchocolatebear 22:55, 22 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Étude

Along similar lines to the "Luft?" proposal, the term "étude" is also related to chess. It literally means "a study", and although it was first used as a musical term (meaning "a short musical composition designed to provide practice in a particular technical skill in the performance of a solo instrument."). An étude in chess is an analogous term, meaning usually a board position specifically engineered to teach players to utilize a specific kind of strategy or game mechanic in order to win. In accordance with this, I changed the list of episodes not named by chess terms. DrChengele 04:44, 30 January 2007 (UTC)

I figured it was, but I couldn't find any sources to confirm it so I left it out Ziiv 03:22, 31 January 2007 (UTC)

Since I am unable to find any sources that talk about Étude as a chess term, i am changing it back. Could you provide a source that talks about Étude as a chess term? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Sir LoseALot (talkcontribs) 03:05, 1 February 2007 (UTC).
Pages that use Etude in reference to chess [4] [5] [6] [7]. Here's one looks a bit more notable [8]. This one explains what an etude is, however, it doesn't look that notable. [9] Is this enough or do we still need a more reliable source? Ziiv 17:44, 1 February 2007 (UTC)
I wasn't aware my word for it wasn't enough :) . It is not really an official term, more a stylization. But still, it is a term used to describe short chess studies meant to educate. Seen in context of other episodes' titles, it is reasonable to assume they meant it as an allusion to chess and not, for example, to a musical piece. By the way, I just googled for "etude chess" and got 300000 results. Should be enough to convince anyone the term is used in connection to chess. (Although to be honest, chess sonata and chess symphony searches also produced outrageous numbers of results). Here's the first one that popped out: [10]. It has Chess Etudes in its title and doesn't even try to explain what they are. In my opinion that implies that chess players are fairly familiar with the term, no? DrChengele 05:36, 14 February 2007 (UTC)
The title makes it seem as though the study is of Lavie... although searching chess etudes seems to pull up a large number of relevant results so it is used as a chess term i guess —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Sir LoseALot (talkcontribs) 04:50, 15 February 2007 (UTC).
That's because the show uses a running metaphor of the story as being chess game with the characters as pieces. Lucciola and Dio are rooks, Delphine is a queen, etc...Ziiv 06:13, 16 February 2007 (UTC)
Thats true, however, all the examples of etudes in chess, that i've found, give you a scenario and want you to find what you want to do in the future. If i recall correctly Etude Lavie is a flashback episode detailing Lavie and Clause's past.

[edit] Anime Unleashed

Anybody know the dates that Last Exile ran on Anime Unleashed? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Sir LoseALot (talkcontribs) 00:35, 24 January 2007 (UTC).

never mind i found it :P —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Sir LoseALot (talkcontribs) 01:58, 24 January 2007 (UTC).

[edit] Greek

Removing the Last Exile greek name, if there is no objection i shall do so --Sir LoseALot 21:30, 24 February 2007 (UTC)

I don't have an issue with removing the Greek names, as only a few actually appear on screen during the series. However, let's leave them in until someone else agrees. If nobody responds in 7 days, then it should be assumed that nobody has a serious problem with the removal. Mintchocolatebear 23:05, 21 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Mysterion

In the english dub, the last mysterion states:

Claus: What lies beyond the furthest reaches of memory? Alvis: The place where all were born and to where all will return: A Blue Star.

Although based on the subtitles, I figure that the literal translation from the japanese would be "World". I'm not sure that this fact is particularly noteworthy. Dr Aaron 11:42, 27 March 2007 (UTC)
