Talk:LeBron James

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Please, please, please sign your comments on the talk page. This is one of the most lacking pages I have come across. Dujang Prang 02:32, 22 September 2006 (UTC)

Someone should weed out all this newspaper lingo from the article, it doesn't sound encyclopedic at all. --Shallot 12:03, 23 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Okay, I went through and cleaned up the worst instances. By the way, "set the tables" is one of my more favorite examples of mangled imagery that I've seen lately. Too bad I had to take it out. - Nat Krause 13:45, 23 Jun 2004 (UTC)

LeBron never committed to play for Maryland. In fact he stated that Ohio State was his primary choice for college. Also, Cleveland failed to make the playoffs his rookie.

I've cleaned up this article by deleting a bunch of POV crap about him being the greatest ever.

Contents

[edit] 23 for Jordan... Incorrect.

Lebron actually didn't wear 23 for Michael Jordan, it was worn in honour of Bruce Flowers, another Cavaliers forward back in the day, as noted in an interview with Lebron in SLAM Magazine.

[edit] Best. Ever.

Why is there no mention of LeBron's prescence on Olympic or NBA All-Star teams? By the way I think LeBron will one day be the best to ever play the game. Any thoughts?

-Derrick Becker

Interesting player - but in a big game it doesn't happen. A good offensive player start to exploit him and he disappears when the clock is ticking down. He will need the support of a team that probably doesn't need him to win a championship.

[edit] Choke factor

I am curious as to why this isn't a section. And no, I'm not anti-LeBron. I want to see him do very well in the league. But the collapses late in the game and/or season are something worth mentioning.

He does not hit clutch shots. Since entering the league, he has hit only 12% of his game-winning attempts and has only made 2 such shots. This is in contrast to the league average of 30%. For comparison: Carmelo Anthony (57%), Dwyane Wade (33%), Iverson (44%), Tracy McGrady (32%), Michael Redd (41%). [1] He goes quiet late in big games, misses late free-throws, and in fact, Coach Mike Brown even had Zydrunas Ilgauskas take his free-throws at one point.

Yea most likely one day he will be. Michael Jordan has big shoes to fill but on day he will. But as soon as i come into the league its over. I will be the next kobe or Lebron that will be me. So look out for me Brandon Chavers coming out of Downey,Ca. I am 14 so you wont see me for a while.peace

                                        -Brandon "Radical Boy" Chavers
hehe still think he's got the choke factor? It's called sample size. Now the public perception is he is "clutch." Oreo man 17:07, 5 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] The Future

LeBron James.... Who doesn't know this mans name? No disrespect but Brandon Chavers Really doesnt know what he's talking about. If Lebron is the way you are trying to make him seem, why throughout the three seasons, has he made one of the biggest impacts on the NBA? Why is he one of the players always talked about? Why has he picked up one of the teams in the NBA that really wasn't a playoff team and turned it into one? He is not over rated, AND he in the running for MVP of this year! He was Rookie of the Year the 2003-2004 season (which was his first year) He came straight out of High School. Kobe did have the same hype when he first came in from High School and look what he's doing now. He's still doing big things in the NBA. Lebron James WILL be the next Micheal Jordan, he has the talent to be the next Micheal Jordan, he has put Cleveland on his back and lead them to the playoffs this year. I'm 15, I play AAU basketball for the Trail Blazers and I play for the Long Branch basketball team and LeBron James IS THE FUTURE!!!

                              -Ezra Kelly Jr-

I agree he's already the top 5/10 player in the NBA and hes only 20.

He isn't as good as Michael Jordan. Probably won't be. Kobe got this much hype when he first started, too.

(No he didn't. Kobe was drafted in the 9th spot and was regarded as having tremendous potential. Lebron was drafted 1st overall and signed an unprecedented $90 million contract with Nike before he ever played an NBA game. He is the youngest basketball player to grace sports illustrated- posing during his junior and senior years in high school. AND he was touted by most professional scouts and NBA people as the most outstanding young player they'd ever seen).

Why is Lebron's height listed at 6'9" in the article? he is definately not 6'9", when seen standing next to his teamate Drew Gooden for example who is 6'9", Lebron does appear slightly shorter. 6'8" 1/2 would be a more accurate listing. (Better check Drew Gooden's height again, cause he is not 6'9").

Edited the page to reduce POV, corrected LeBron's All-Star Status, this is his 3rd season, he did not make the All-Star team in 2004, made it 2005, and the team has not been named for 2006. Please refrain from editing that back in.

[edit] NPOV Issues

This is an encyclopedia not a fan site, please refrain from including passages that praise him beyond factual basis. i.e. it is too early to reference him as one of the greatest players of all time. -(Brodey)

I take some issue with this: "Since then, with his numerous acomplishments and rapid development he has arguably surpassed the unprecedented hype that surrounded him." Sure, it says "arguably," but considering the nature of the "unprecedented hype," it seems impossible to exceed it this early in his career (though I would say he's met it). --Jeff Greco 19:36, 21 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Remove section

Removed the following: "Lebron James recently had a talk with Oscar Robertson, the only player in league history to average a triple-double for a season. Oscar Robertson said that Lebron is the only player in the league with the potential to do the same thing and proclaimed that he will accomplish this great feat before his career ends."

It was listed uner "Awards/Honors" This is an interesting piece of information, but is hardly encyclopedia worthy. It definitely isn't an Award or Honor. The last two items in "Awards/Honors" are questionable, but did not want to remove without discussion.

Would also recommend someone go through and remove some of the fluff.

-I agree this whole page seems way to praising of him and his abilities.

[edit] his "unselfishness"??

Why is it not a good thing to be unselfish on the court? Do they mean that he'd just as soon pass the ball as shoot it? If so, remember that Larry Bird was also known for that. As far as the clutch shots go, well, it's great if he can be known for that, but the best teams in NBA history did not get that way primarily through making those shots. They got that way through consistent excellent performance. If Lebron, during his career, can lead his team (and mine) to a championship series and be a good producer himself, that'd make me happy. Cleveland certainly could use that as well.

[edit] The Next Michael Jordan?

Should the fact that some people consider him as the enxt michael Jordan be included in his intro? i think it might be mentioned soemwhere else in the article.

So being the next Michael Jordan is supposed to be a good thing? Dujang Prang 20:25, 25 July 2006 (UTC)

What do you think. GOAT. end of story.

Do you mean Michael Jordan is GOAT, Lebron James is GOAT, or are you asking what I think of LL Cool J.'s GOAT album? The whole "next Michael Jordan" thing cannot be proven. Ever. You can include him in the "best ever" arguments, but "next Michael Jordan" is impossible. (I think it's a ludicrous distinction anyway, but that's my POV). Dujang Prang 02:46, 22 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Clutch assists, clutch rebounds = still clutch

LeBron is awsome, and I'd just like to point out that he is NOT bad in the cluth, I've seen him many times get clutch rebounds, blocks, assists (vs TOR, he has the last second assist to Jones to score a three, they won by one point), etc.

Of course he's having a hard time SCORING in the last minutes, who do you think is getting double teamed?

[edit] Stength and Weaknesses Section

I think the lebron criticism section should be replaced with a strenght and weakness section, similar to what is on the pages of players like steve nash, shaq and Yao Ming. what do you think? -Brodey

"James's third year of high school he won the marathon and is a hero. contributed more to the phenom's impressive stats as James averaged 29.7 points and 8.4 rebounds" ...

Yeah, this needs cleaning up. Eccomi 23:11, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Marathon?

The "Junior Year" section included a reference to James winning the marathon which I could not confirm anywhere, and regardless seems incredibly doubtful. It has been removed.

[edit] Vandalism

It sure is annoying having to clean up the constant vandalism on this page.

Just wanted to say that...i know its always happening on tons of pages. regards, --Morriss 19:32, 7 June 2006 (UTC)

Unless it get's really out of hand like a group of malicious users i don't think it needs semi-pretection yet. --Duhon 7 June 2006 (UTC)

agreed. --Morriss 22:56, 7 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Weasel words

There seems to be a good deal of weasel words popping up in the player profile section:

Some believe that James is the best player in the league, though Kobe Bryant seems to be the more widely accepted choice for that title at the moment. Recently, after winning his first NBA championship, there are some that actually consider Dwayne Wade to be the best player in the league, though he played on the Miami Heat where he found much more help from his teammates than James did.

What Lebron has done at such a young age is unprecedented. He is considered to be the best 21 year old player to ever play the game of basketball. For this reason, there are several that expect Lebron James to possibly even eclipse Michael Jordan as a player, and take on the title as the best basketball player to ever play the game.

I think this whole passage shold be redone or deleted. Duhon June 23rd 2006

  • Agreed. It's LEBRON JAMES' Biography, why the hell is there mention of Dwayne, Kobe, etc.? Just drop facts, POV

[edit] Links section

The anti-lebron link keeps getting deleted. People, there is no logical distinction between fan site links, etc. and non-fan link sites. They are all equally relevant. If non-fan links have to go, then all fan links should have to go. Also, the links section is not part of the encyclopedia entry (statements of fact regarding a person/place/thing), but links to additional resources.

[edit] Nike Deal

ESPN's Bill Simmons as well as John Holllinger (others I'm sure too) report that many people around the league say that in James Nike deal he gets paid significantly more if he plays in NY, LA of Chicago. It is still a rumor, but is spouted by some pretty legit people so I decided to put it in the article. Does anyone know one way or the other? Also whould we quote Simmons or Hollinger about the rumor?

Simmons mentioned it in a recent article, but everything goes to ESPN In$ider after 12 hours, so citing it is pointless. Simmons says he gets it from credible sources, so do we say "People who know people who know people say..." Dujang Prang 20:20, 25 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Off the court

What about Lebron's charity activities in Ohio? Please add a section on this if known.

[edit] Academics

What about something about him besides basketball? Like did he do well in academics. The Wikipedia on Kobe Bryant talks about his SAT score.

[edit] Declaring for NBA as a junior

This article states Lebron petitioned to go to the NBA after his junior year of high school. I'm pretty sure I've read a quote by him that says he never even thought about going after his junior year.

[edit] PER

I made an edit some time ago stating that LeBron James was second in PER in 2005-06 to Dirk Nowitzki, not Kevin Garnett. Someone recently changed it back. Based on the reference, it appears that the editor was not looking at PER, but at a metric called "efficiency," which the NBA tracks, but isn't useful to any basketball statisticians and is like PER but much, much more flawed in very obvious ways. That James was second in efficiency is not worth mentioning. I have changed the article to say that James finished second to Nowitzki, and I have changed the referred website to a site that provides a statistical summary of the 2005-06 NBA season, including the top five in the league in PER. Garnett was fifth, not first (though he did finish first each of the previous two years). Hpanic7342 04:01, 16 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] OSU for college

I think it needs to be pointed out that, while he did say OSU would have been his choice for college while he was on The Daily Show, that whole week's worth of episodes were filmed from OSU, so that could have influenced his answer. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 24.166.44.117 (talk) 06:58, 22 December 2006 (UTC).

[edit] Youngest ever to score 2000 points

The article states that LeBron was the youngest to ever score 2000 points in a season, and to average 30 ppg for a season, both in the 2005-2006 season. But in reality, he had already scored 2175 points in the 2004-2005 season, so a whole year ealier.

[edit] LeBron's Myspace?

So can someone confirm that the Myspace page that is linked at the bottom is actually him? I'm not convinced, seeing that the page has only 260 friends, including "The real Dwayne Wade" and such...

Not saying it isnt, but could someone check? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Brytbryan (talk • contribs) 21:50, 7 January 2007 (UTC).

This is clearly not LeBron James' MySpace, number of factors contribute to this:

-unprofessional layout (used 3rd party image site and slideshow, frames are out of proportion, punctuation/grammar errors, pics section doesnt work)

-lack of friends (only 270)

-no other team mates or fellow basketball players in top 8

-if you look at his number 1 friend, it's a lady who lacks 'class' uses bad language and claims to be LeBron James' 'girl', I dont believe he would taint his reputation by having her as his number 1 friend. one of the greast basketpalyers

[edit] Meet the LeBrons Commercials

Anyone know anything about these? They look funny XD

[edit] Picture

Is it possible to get a different picture for this article? The current one is quite blurry and of poor quality.
