All Movie Guide profile |
Leviathan (1989) is a sci-fi film, following a line of movies like Alien (1979) and The Thing (1982), involving a hideous creature that stalks and kills a group of people in a sealed environment. The movie takes place miles below the ocean, where an American mining expedition accidentally uncovers the wreckage of a Soviet ship. There, unknowingly, the crew transports aboard their mining base the remains of a virus that was responsible for the destruction of the aforementioned Soviet vessel. Two crew members ingest the virus in some Russian vodka, setting into motion the horrific evolution of a creature created from the DNA of various sea creatures. The monster is born from mutated, fused bodies, and will stop at nothing to absorb, inhabit, or slaughter everyone on board.
Movie stars Peter Weller, Amanda Pays, and Richard Crenna.
It is one of many underwater-themed movies released around 1989, including The Abyss, Deepstar Six, The Evil Below, Lords of the Deep, and The Rift (Endless Descent).
