Liberty Tax Service is a United States-based company specialized in the preparation of tax returns for individuals and small businesses. It was founded by John Hewitt in 1997, after he sold off his interest in rival Jackson Hewitt.
Liberty Tax Service also receives various media attention due to its effective store-front wavers, and friendly customer service policies. Some of the attention given to its store-front wavers has been negative however, because certain branches of Liberty Tax Service have been seen making their employees dance outdoors dressed in green Statue of Liberty outfits and waving signs in zero degree weather.
As of 2007, Liberty Tax Service is the fastest-growing international tax preparation firm in the world, with some 2,400 offices in the U.S. and Canada. They have prepared over 4 million individual income tax returns.
Most individual offices are independently-owned franchises, and Liberty Tax Service was ranked by Entrepreneur Magazine as one of the 10 most successful franchises in the country. In addition, Black Enterprise has named the Liberty Tax Service franchise opportunity as one of the most affordable.
