Actually only 5 parties are are affiliated with the federal party.

I'm 99% sure that the Ontario Liberals are affiliated with the federal party. You want to want diambugate the template so it doesn't matter, because right now, it's confusing. --Spinboy 18:34, 14 Apr 2005 (UTC)

And I'm 100% sure that it is not. There is the Ontario Liberal Party [1] and a completely seperate Liberal Party of Canada (Ontario) [2]. You can see the list of the provincial wings here. With respect to your comments about the template, I agree. I don't find it all that helpful, but I thought I should edit it to at least make it accurate. It also links to the Government of Canada, the Parliament of Canada and Where We Stand (and organization I am a part of which is NOT attached to the Liberal Party). A hyperlink does not mean a legal link! - Jord 17:10, 18 Apr 2005 (UTC)

The Liberal Party of Canada (Ontario) acts for federal elections only. For some reason, they felt the need to have a seperate org for federal elections. It doesn't mean they aren't affiliated. I think we certainly do especially when you consider that the BC and Quebec parties aren't even ideologically aligned. There is a big difference as well between aligned and non-aligned parties as far as the structure of the party goes. The leaders of provincial parties get to be automatic delegates to Liberal conventions, Dalton McGuinty does not because he is not the leader of a recongized provincial party. Provincial parties can propose policies to be considered at Liberal conventions, the Ontario Liberal Party cannot. The OLP and LPC(O) are completely distinct organizations, they have seperate staffs, offices, contitutions, executives etc. - Jord 20:56, 14 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Manitoba has the same party president listed on the LPC Website, Alberta, Ontario, Quebec and BC have different Party Presidents that aren't affiliated with the federal liberals. So Manitoba is with the Libs.199.235.112.239 14:50, 19 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Actually that is not the case, Bobbi Éthier is the president of LPC(MB) [3] and Dennis Dempsey is the president of the MLP [4]. I could be a bit waivered on Manitoba as the two wings only dissolved into seperate organizations due to a complete ban on union and corporate donations to political parties in Manitboa. They are legally seperate and must have seperate officers, but they do share office space. Thoughts? - Jord 17:08, 18 Apr 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Northwest Territories

I added the defunct Northwest Territories Liberal Party, im not sure that it looks good, so if someone can make it fit in better, i would appreciate it. --Cloveious 16:41, 12 July 2005 (UTC)

I don't necessarily think it is appropriate to make this a historical table, if we start talking historical, at one point all of the provincial Liberal parties were affiliate with the Liberal Party of Canada. I would suggest we remove the defunct NWT party. I will do so if you do not object. - Jord 16:48, 12 July 2005 (UTC)

I think thats kinda contradictory since all the non-affliated provincial Liberal parties, are listed as non affliated in this template. Its the only defunct Liberal party from a province or territory, as far as I know. And not a quirky historical off shoot, like the Laurier Liberals. Of course if you can find a better or more appropriate way to link the party in with Liberal history, it does have an interesting but brief and most certainly forgotten history. --Cloveious 21:32, 12 July 2005 (UTC)

Well I would be a bit more comfortable if there was some sort of source. Parties from that era were not the creatures that parties are today and was this really a party at all, as understood in the modern sense? In that era a lot of parties were merely parliamentary organizations that consisted solely of a caucus and had no extraparliamentary infrastructure. - Jord 22:32, 12 July 2005 (UTC)

I have listed a source, it talks a little about the Liberal and Conservative Party of the Northwest Territories and I have found a source on at least one other from that time period, that lists the Liberal opposition leader, but my computer stalled, before i bookmarked it. There was at least one Northwest Territories Conservative Party convention in 1902 Personnel of the Northwest Territories Assembly 1888 - 1905. I also found another web page that mentions a third fringe type party, that i'm trying to re-find. I also know that the same Act that gave Haultain the title of Preimier also allowed for partys to be created as well as a change to how votes are conducted. --Cloveious 05:12, 13 July 2005 (UTC)

(I kind of think that if we're going to include non-affiliated parties -- whose only connection is a common name -- including one defunct affiliated party makes sense.) whatever, geeze, its obvious of the anti-conservative bias on this site. the frickin PEI NDP had an infobox before most provincial tories did. I have better things to do then to fight with an un-elected grit. if someone else wants to take up the battle then so be it, its not worth my time. Pellaken

Calm down, please. If the frickin' PEI NDP had an infobox before most provincial Tories did, it was because people who are interested in NDP organizations spent the time doing the infoboxes before people interested in conservative parties did. There is a bias in Wikipedia toward things that editors are interested in. You would be hard-pressed to find much detail about political parties in Romania, yet every minor political fringe party in Canada has an article, largely be that's my area of interest. Check out Pilgrims of Saint Michael and Committee on Monetary and Economic Reform. These wacky groupuscules of social crediters have articles because I have an arcane interest in social credit and am willing to spend time researching and writing about them. (And I am not a socred.)

As far as the issue at hand, I think I have to change my position based on the discussion on the conservative parties template. On that template, I argued that there are too many fringe conservative parties to include, and that only those with representation in legislatures should be on the list. In this case, the NWT Liberal Party clearly does not qualify because it is defunct, and therefore should be excluded. (In the case of the PEI NDP, however, since it is a branch of the federal NDP, I would argue for keeping it in the template even though it has no seat. The structure of the NDP avoids the fringe party issue we have on the conservative template.) Ground Zero 19:53, 11 August 2005 (UTC)

My main reason for thinking the nearly forgotten Northwest Territories Liberal Party should be included in the template was because It said Provincial and Territorial Liberal Parties. The Northwest Territories Liberal Party was a mainstream branch of the Liberal Party of Canada during its day, and it led to the creation of two provincial Liberal branches. Besides that, I think adding it to the template raised more awarness of Northwest Territories party politics then had beed raised in the last 100 years, I look at the Conservative template and it has a different theme "Major Conservative Parties of Canada" which the Northwest Territories Liberal-Conservative party would not fit If it was say Branches of the Progressive Conservative Party template it might fit with the BC Conservatives and the Saskatchewan PC Party. By the way in case you are wondering, I'm an Alberta Alliance Party supporter. But a Alberta and Northwest Territories political history buff, especially fringe history Left wing or right. --Cloveious 05:46, 17 August 2005 (UTC)

Remember that I was a candidate for the PEI NDP (party with infobox) and had to run agaisnt the PC Party of PEI (party without infobox). PEI has 27 ridings, and of the 54 Grit and PC candidates, two of them took more then all 24 PEI NDP candidates combined. I know its due to intreest, but the bias exists BECAUSE more people are interested in a party that took 3.06% of the vote (I took 3.07% btw) then one that took a MAJORITY of votes in 2003, 2000, and a plurality in 1996. Either way, they do now, and I'll continue to defend conservative parties the way I defended the conservative template. I'm happy now that I'm a red tory, much happier then when I faked being a social democrat in order to support my personal friend Gary Robichaud, or when I was a grit for a year. this is a template simply labled as template:liberal, so why is it just about Canada? It's not like it's template:liberal/canada or something
