[edit] Columnist and Writer
Byfield was editor and publisher for the now defunct Alberta Report magazine for 18 years.[1] He is the son of conservative columnist Ted Byfield. Like his father, Byfield is also a columnist for the Calgary Sun and the Edmonton Sun. [2]
[edit] Lobbyist
Link Byfield is the founder of the Citizens Centre for Freedom and Democracy, a lobby group dedicated to pushing for responsible government. [3]
[edit] Senator in waiting
Link Byfield was the first to declare his candidacy for the 2004 Senator in waiting election on September 27, 2004.[4] He decided to remain Independent of the other parties, and was one of two Independent Senator-in-waiting candidates—the other being Tom Sindlinger.
He was elected to the 4th and final spot in the block vote with 236,382 votes. He is the first independent senator in waiting, and the first independent elected in an Elections Alberta run election since Raymond Speaker and Walt Buck in 1982.
In 2005, Byfield received the Alberta Centennial Medal. [5].
[edit] Businessman
Evidence has been put forward by a former employee to suggest that Link Byfield constructed the demise of Alberta Report by selling the advertising department and print facilities at fire-sale prices to a company that would become his Alberta Business Report and by reducing the magazine's revenue by 50% by slashing subscription rates. The former employee suggests that this was in order to consolidate debt and existing obligations to employees into the soon-to-be bankrupt Alberta Report, while keeping the subscriber base, advertising revenue and a free printer for the new magazine.
