[edit] Prologue

26 edits and this is all there is? There's more information at Mouth than there is here. Unless this page is improved, it should probably just become a redirect to Mouth again. --Sum0 22:47, 3 November 2005 (UTC)

I agree. Should include more on the lips' role in eroticism and sexuality, as well as people who are known for their lips.

I have been translating the well-written and long "lip" article on German Wikipedia, but not being a native speaker (level 3), some of the medical terms are especially tough! Gilliamjf 06:51, 13 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Fantastic!

Hoorah for User:GilliamJF and the other editors who have vastly improved this article. I would have done it myself, but didn't really know where to start. Maybe I'll help out later. Sum0 21:11, 31 January 2006 (UTC)

I am glad to have done a partial translation of for interwiki article. I couldn't let such a short stub have gone unchanged, when I do like to translate quality German articles when necessary. GilliamJF 07:18, 8 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Lipstick

Am I the only one who finds the topmost image somewhat... revolting? I feel the first image should be one of human lips in their natural state, rather than coated with a variety of chemical substances. Note that lipstick is not common to all world cultures and the photo doesn't represent the appearance of lips in other parts of the world.

To my mind, it would make just as much sense to show photos of mens' lips with and without various kinds of mustaches. Lipstick, like mustaches, are an ornament that really has nothing to do with lips themselves. If I find a more appropriate image of human lips, does anyone object to my adding it? Perhaps a montage with some "ordinary" people's lips of several different races, then some celebrity lips like Mick Jagger and Angelina Jolie?  ;) Just kidding... -Kasreyn 11:01, 12 February 2006 (UTC)

I agree about the image, revolting is a bit much but something about it is just a bit creepy. This is one of those images that I can't believe someone hasn't taken and posted. Someone with a digital camera take a photo of their lips and put it up, then we'll have no copyright worries. I'm not opposed to a montage but I certainly don't think it's necessary. How different are lips anyway? And whatever minor differences in lips that race causes certainly aren't noteworthy and currently aren't even eluded to in the article. Vicarious 21:00, 12 February 2006 (UTC)
I don't like it either. As soon as I saw it I thought "Noooooo!" and hurried to this talk page to compain. But I can't be bothered finding a better picture :p Vadmium 06:22, 8 April 2006 (UTC)
I like the photo at the French article, and there are a few photos at the German article showing the different functions of the lips. The model in the French photo is wearing light lipstick, but it's very tastefully done. I will transfer it over. GilliamJF 07:18, 8 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Thank You

To whoever replaced the awful former image with the current tasteful one, thank you. Kasreyn 19:11, 26 April 2006 (UTC)

It was GilliamJF. Thank you! Kasreyn 19:12, 26 April 2006 (UTC)
You're welcome, I simply "borrowed" it from the French interwiki article. GilliamJF 19:20, 26 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] How about this one?

Worth including? Kasreyn 11:03, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

Perhaps if one crops out the nose, chin, exc. to include just the lips. --208.127.64.161 02:50, 18 December 2006 (UTC)

Update: Done!

Image:Wikipedia Lip.jpg

The only main problem is that someone will have to find a better spot for it. Also note I enlarged the lips to make the picture actual size. --208.127.64.181 06:49, 18 December 2006 (UTC)

Alright. I guess the place that it's in is fine, if nobody objects. By the way, do you think it would also be helpful to get a picture of lips from a side angle? --208.127.64.217 10:55, 19 December 2006 (UTC)

This one is too low res, you can hardly see any detail. New one? Crop from at least a full size 5+ megapixel digital photo? Dreamer.redeemer 04:56, 2 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Period

Do the areola, lips, etc. change sizes periodically according to the menstrual cycle?

[edit] Kissing

Odd that there's nothing about kissing in the functions section ;) Junuxx 21:47, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

Here It states that the lips are made of skin but they are not. The exterior composition of the lips is not mede of skin.

[edit] Two Things

First off, is there a need for the photo at the bottom of the page? Secondly, this article is almost completely citation-less. --208.127.64.118 01:24, 10 January 2007 (UTC)

I agree that this article could use some citations, but as it stands the article has a 'citation needed' tag after almost every sentence. This seems like overkill, and considerably decreases the readability of the article. Would there be any objection if I removed some of the citation needed tags to keep the article more readable and aesthetically pleasing, keeping enough obviously to show that the article still lacks citation? (I would add citations if I had a reliable source of information on lips) Diabolical Dr Ely 14:42, 10 January 2007 (UTC)

I've removed all of the tags. That was absolutely ridiculous. The only ones still there are in the original research-ish list of celebrities, which could probably be largely deleted. Kafziel Talk 20:31, 11 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] erroneous lip coloring info?

The following:

The skin of the lip, with three to five cellular layers, is very thin compared to typical face skin, having up to 16 layers. With light skin color, the lip skin contains no melanocyte (pigment cells, which give skin its color). Because of this, the blood vessels appear through the skin of the lips, which leads to their notable red coloring. With darker skin color this effect is less prominent, as in this case the skin of the lips contains more melanin and thus is visually thicker.

Says essentially that lighter people have no pigment in their lips and darker people do. Sources? Seems more reasonable to me to think that all colors of people have pigment in their lips, and that such manifests itself differently in the 5 layers as opposed to 16 of skin. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Dreamer.redeemer (talkcontribs) 05:01, 2 March 2007 (UTC).
