List of primary characters in Code Lyoko

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is a list of primary characters in the French animated television series Code Lyoko. It covers the protagonists, the antagonist, and the primary supporting characters.

Contents

[edit] Main characters

The main characters are Aelita, Jeremie Belpois, Odd Della Robbia, Yumi Ishiyama, Ulrich Stern, and Xana. The first five are the protagonists, commonly referred to as "the group" or "Lyoko warriors" in the series. They are the ones who attempt to foil Xana's plans. The primary antagonist is Xana, who seeks to take over the world.

[edit] Aelita

Main article: Aelita (Code Lyoko)

Aelita is a native of the virtual world of Lyoko and the sole known inhabitant. She has the unique ability to shut down the towers on Lyoko, stopping Xana's attacks on the real world. On taking up residency in the real world in the second season, she takes the surname of "Stones." She had proven slightly gullible in the real world early on, like when Sissi told her about the showers with no girls in them (they were the boys' showers), but she has adjusted quite well. In terms of personality, she is something of a mix of Jeremie and Odd, in that she can be both reckless and stubborn at times.

After Franz Hopper revives Aelita and completes her human form in the episode "The Key", she gains the ability to attack with energy blasts and can properly devirtualize to Earth (without using the Code: Earth program that Jeremie had created) when losing all of her life points.

[edit] Jeremie Belpois

Main article: Jeremie Belpois

Jeremie is the brains of the group and the leader of the group outside of Lyoko. He usually determines their plans before any missions to Lyoko. He is the only one (except for Aelita) that can operate the supercomputer, and is much more proficient in its use than she is. While the others head to Lyoko to fight Xana, Jeremie observes and directs them from an interface outside of Lyoko. This allows him to warn them of threats, materialize vehicles, and reload weapons in the case of Odd. His help is invaluable in their attempts to reach the towers, and their performance tends to suffer greatly without it.

  • Note: Jeremie's name is occasionally spelled "Jeremy," especially in transition clips in the show, both of which are accepted as correct due to localization.

[edit] Odd Della Robbia

Odd in the real world.

Main article: Odd Della Robbia

Odd is the comic relief of the group. He is often hyperactive, and rarely takes things seriously. He wants to be a musician or film director of some sort when he is older. He dislikes Sissi, Hervé and Nicolas and teases them constantly. This has lessened in recent episodes as the two groups have become more civil towards each other, especially with Sissi. He has a dog named Kiwi, who usually stays hidden in his dorm room during classes because of a "no pets" rule. Odd is the only one in the group who gets sincere enjoyment from putting his life on the line in Lyoko.

[edit] Yumi Ishiyama

Yumi in the real world.

Main article: Yumi Ishiyama

Originally from Japan, Yumi is the only one in the group that doesn't board at the school, as well as being the oldest and tallest member of the group. She acts as the leader of the group inside Lyoko, often determining their plan of attack, as well as being a surrogate big sister to the other characters, especially Jeremie. Yumi dresses in an all-black, somewhat Goth style. She is very mature for her age, but has more insecurities than she lets on. Though she never openly reciprocates Ulrich's feelings, she does have them, and she becomes very jealous of anyone else whom he seems interested in.

[edit] Ulrich Stern

Main article: Ulrich Stern

Though a less than average student, Ulrich is very athletic and is a skilled soccer player. He has trouble with his father about his grades. He's also skilled in the martial art of Pencak Silat, which he is seen practicing on occasion. He is quite popular at Kadic; his popularity rivals even Sissi's. Despite his sternness, he has strong feelings toward Yumi, and is quick to judge anyone to whom she seems attracted. An apparent innate shyness has prevented him from admitting his love to Yumi to date, though they have almost kissed in Lyoko before going back in time in the episode "Routine". Sissi also seems to obsess over him, but he consistently rebuffs her at every turn.

[edit] William Dunbar

William at Kadic.
William at Kadic.

William (voiced by David Gasman in the English version) is introduced as a new student in the second season. He was kicked out of his old school for plastering love letters all over the school. He is also an admirer of Yumi; in "Marabounta" he indicates to Ulrich that, if Ulrich does not express his feelings to Yumi sooner or later, he will pursue her romantically himself. However, he does show some respect for Yumi and Ulrich's romantic relationship, and does not intend to break them up.

Approximately Yumi's age, he has exhibited common sense and ability to take charge in dangerous situations, like in "Attack of the Zombies". His well-meaning restraint of Aelita, Jeremie, and Odd in that episode slowed the team's response to a Xana attack, however.

Quite a few episodes have proven that William is usually a very kind hearted person, but he can be quite mean when he needs (or wants) to be. For example, he goads Ulrich into doing something he obviously didn't want to do (rock climbing) in the episode "Vertigo". On the other hand, William invited Ulrich to join his go-kart club in "A Bad Turn" after Ulrich turned out to be a decent driver during the school's driving test.

Several episodes show various faults William has. For example, in the episode "Final Mix", it's shown that he can't dance. Later on, in the episode "Vertigo", Ulrich reveals that William has a fear of spiders. In "The Secret", William also reveals that he cannot swim, despite the fact that he can do so rather well in the second season.

In the episode "The Secret", William, fed up with Yumi's erratic behavior, decides to follow the group to the factory, where he learns about Lyoko. When asked to retrieve Yumi to help the gang he does so, but both are intercepted by a possessed worker for a building demolition company, who has set up dynamite sticks all around the factory. William succeeds in defusing the detonator for the dynamite sticks. The team then votes to see if William can become a trusted member of the group. Surprisingly, while even Ulrich agrees, Yumi votes against him due to her severe distrust of him. As expected, a return trip is used to wipe his memory. However, faced with Xana's increasing power and the loss of almost all of Lyoko in "Double Trouble", Yumi changes her mind and lets William join (a decision that Yumi later comes to regret). This proves to be a costly mistake, since William's cockiness and inexperience leads to his downfall during his first Lyoko mission. Using the Scyphozoa, Xana possesses William (who was ignorant of the Scyphozoa's purpose) and uses him to destroy Lyoko. The act of doing so transforms William into a darker, Xana-themed version of himself.

William's Lyoko attire consists of a white and blue form-fitting body suit and a zanbatō. Like Ulrich's sword, it can absorb and deflect lasers. The sword is apparently heavy enough that it can't be wielded one-handed (by unpossessed William), and its weight is great enough for its own momentum to spin William if swung hard enough. In comparison to the more subtle attack styles of the other Lyoko warriors, William merely uses brute force to destroy everything in his path. William's own battle experience is short-lived, however, since Xana possesses him shortly after his arrival.

When possessed by Xana, William can fire energy blasts from his sword (like Ulrich did in "Franz Hopper") and hover to a small degree. He can also use Ulrich's super-sprint ability, but leaves a purple trail instead of a yellow one. After Xana uses William to destroy Lyoko's core, William's color scheme is changed to an all-black outfit with red outlines. The eye of Xana also appears on both his head and chest, but not in his eyes. He will continue wearing this outfit in the fourth season, as seen in a promotional photo for the fourth season.[1] He also retains his sword, albeit with black vines creeping up the blade from the sword's hilt much like a lyoko tower.[2] William can also generate a black mist similar to one of Xana's ghosts, which he is seen using to lift an unconscious Aelita.[3]

Spoilers end here.

[edit] Xana

The Eye of Xana, seen in objects/persons it possesses.
Main article: Xana (Code Lyoko)

Created by Franz Hopper, Xana is the antagonist of the show. He seeks to take over the world, but often focuses his efforts on the group, seeing as how they foil most of his plans. Unlike villains seen in most fiction, Xana does not usually communicate with his enemies. Most of his attacks tend to be fairly straightforward with little or no warning beforehand. In the second season, Xana has become more talkative and more subtle in some his tactics, occasionally betraying the surprise. He contacts Jeremie through a text message on one occasion, though only to deliver an ultimatum. In season three he occasionally talks to the characters as if he were humanoid, revealing some hints at a personality, such as his open admiration of Jeremie's intelligence and talent (though he later takes back what he says and calls him a "stupid dolt" a while later).

Xana's main power is possession through a energy-based "ghost". He uses this power to possess machines, animals, and even people, turning those things into weapons for use against his enemies. Things possessed by Xana become capable of feats they should not logically be capable of, such as eletrical sockets emitting high-frequency sound waves and people gaining the power to phase through solid matter.

  • Note: Xana tends to be referred to as male, despite having no gender. Its "real" voice also sounds male, as it is done by a male voice actor.

[edit] Supporting characters

Along with the main characters, several supporting characters are seen in almost every episode, usually as a barrier to the main characters or as comic relief, or both.

[edit] Elisabeth 'Sissi' Delmas

Sissi at Kadic.

Main article: Elisabeth Delmas

Sissi is the spoiled daughter of the school's principal, Jean-Pierre Delmas, and considers herself to be the most attractive girl in school. She is attracted to Ulrich (who does not feel the same way) and is jealous of Yumi (whom Ulrich is attracted to). Undoubtedly snobbish, during the first season she only rarely showed a more emphatic side. She has lightened up in the second season, though she still seems to be self serving. Sometimes, she even helps the group achieve victory, though she's not quite aware of the extent to which she helps. She admits in the first season episode "Holiday in the Fog" that all she wants is to be accepted by Jeremie and the others, and that she wants to be part of the main group.

[edit] Franz Hopper

Main article: Franz Hopper

Franz Hopper is the creator of the supercomputer, Lyoko, and Xana. He was once a science teacher at Kadic. He also lived at a house near Kadic called the Hermitage. Jeremie has a copy of his diaries, copied from a series of CDs that were destroyed by Xana shortly after the group found them. The diary is deciphered in the episode "Revelation".

Before "Final Round", Franz Hopper was trapped somewhere within Lyoko. He could reach out to the real world through the use of the towers, but not nearly as effectively as Xana can. He wishes to help the group in their struggle against Xana. After Lyoko's destruction, he flees to the internet, sending the group a coded message to inform them about it. The content of his message has not yet been revealed.

[edit] Jim Moralés

Jim is the physical education teacher, handyman, and campus supervisor at Kadic Junior High School. He also has a few smaller duties from time to time in a few select episodes.
