Talk:List of Roman amphitheatres
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
[edit] Sources
Some amphitheatres are cited without any sources and are not mentioned in the linked articles too. E.g. there was afaik no amphitheatre in Kos and also a google-search didn't showed anything. Could the person who added it to the list please cite a source? --Enlil2 17:35, 22 July 2006 (UTC)
Concerning my addition of Vienne to the list; my source was the Vienne article itself, which mentions one.
When I look into it further, I can only find picture of a normal theatre. It's likely that somebody confused the two types in the Vienne article. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by SkiDragon (talk • contribs).
- I've corrected the article Vienne, Isère. It clearly refers to the building on Mont Pipet, which means the scenic Roman theatre. See also the satellite image --Enlil2 14:42, 5 November 2006 (UTC)
I am starting to think the Bosra, Syria addition is wrong. I can only find pictures of a theatre. Can anybody confirm or deny this? --SkiDragon 04:13, 5 December 2006 (UTC)
- Remainings of an amphitheatre have been found in the late 1980s. There is not much to see, I have only a foto of a part of what has probably been a Vomitorium. Altough the identification as amphitheatre has been disputed in the beginning (see here for literature) it has AFAIK been confirmed and is also on this map image:Bostra_map_of_Roman_city.jpg (sorry for the low quality photo of the low quality map). Since Bostra is the capital of the Roman province Arabia and was also having a military camp, the existence of an amphitheatre is not so surprising. --Enlil2 19:57, 7 December 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for the info. It also looks like there is a circus there. I guess I will add it to the Circus (building) article.--SkiDragon 23:02, 7 December 2006 (UTC)
- Yes. There is a circus. It has been excavated quite a while ago. For literature, see e.g. Maurice Sartre: Bostra des origines à l'Islam. Librairie Orientaliste Paul Geuthner, Paris 1985 (There is almost no english literature about it since mainly French plus some Italian and German archeologists were there.) --Enlil2 11:01, 8 December 2006 (UTC)

- I did not find those, not meaning they could not be existing. Where did you find your list? Joris1919 02:06, 12 February 2007 (UTC)
The list was compiled from other language wikipedias, as well as any links I added to the bottom. --SkiDragon 04:30, 12 February 2007 (UTC)
