Magdalena de Kino

Magdalena de Kino is a city and its surrounding municipality located in the Mexican state of Sonora. The city had a 2005 census population of 23,101, while the municipality's population was 25,500. Magdalena de Kino is located in the northern section of Sonora within 80 kilometers of the Mexico-US border. To the north the municipality abuts Nogales, to the south, the municipality of Santa Ana, to the east, Imuris and Cucurpe, and to the west, the municipalities of Tubutama and Sáric. Its main sectors include San Ignacio, San Isidro, Tacicuri, and Sásabe. The surface area of the city is approximately 1,460.23 km² (563.8 sq mi). The city was named after the Italian missionary, Father Eusebio Francisco Kino, who undertook missionary work in the area as well as the region now known as the American state of Arizona.

In the past, the territory was populated by the Papagos and Pimas. In 1687 with the arrival of Father Eusebio Francisco Kino in Sonora, the first missions were developed. The municipal head was founded at the beginning of 17th century by the Lieutenant Juan Bautista Escalante. The city was founded by decree in December, 1923.^{[citation needed]} "Santa Maria Magdalena de Buquivaba" was the name of the city until 1966, when the name was changed to Magdalena de Kino.^{[citation needed]}

Agriculture continues to be a key industry throughout the municipality. Of the 1,341 surrounding hectares of arable land, 1,142 were irrigated while 199 were not in the most recent agricultural cycle. Key crops include vegetables are harvested include various fruits, wheat, maize, common bean as well as sorghum. Cattle ranching is also dominant in this region.

Industry is an important factor in the development of the municipality as it employs 2,085 workers, with emphasis in the maquiladoras. In addition, the city has production in beverages, construction and furniture.

The Temple of Santa Maria Magdalena. The location where the image of San Francisco Xavier an important historical figure both in Sonora as well as in the neighboring U.S. state of Arizona.
Father Kino, who passed away in the year of 1711, lays to rest in a crypt made in his honor, near the mission that he founded. The monument was constructed in 1966, subsequent to the discovery of the remains of Father Kino.^{[citation needed]}
The Father Kino Museum construction adapted by Mr. Marco Antonio Ortez, where diverse objects of the indigenous cultures of the region are exhibited, as photographies, arms and clothes.
