Malerie Marder (born 1971, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) is an American photographer and artist who lives and works in Los Angeles, California. Her worker centers on vivid color photographs that are highly studied in both their emotional and aesthetic effects. She concentrates on the time-honored photographic genre of the nude study, made contemporary by disquieting personal, sexual and psychological aspects.
Marder was educated at Bard College, Annandale on the Hudson, New York, where she was awarded a B.A. in 1993 and at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, where she earned an M.F.A. in 1998.
Her first video work, At Rest, was first shown in 2003. Marder edited videotape shot over two years into nearly thirteen minutes of friends and family, always naked, in various states of repose: couples asleep in bed, a child resting on a plump pillow, a woman relaxing in the bathtub. Composer Jonathan Bepler produced the sound track, transforming organic sounds like breathing and heartbeats into a rhythmic, meditative whir.
