[edit] Musical career
Riley was a member of The Fall from 1978 to 1982, originally working as a roadie before playing bass and, later, lead guitar. After falling out of favour with the venerable Mark E. Smith, Riley left to from his own band, The Creepers, with whom he released several albums.
[edit] Radio career
Riley is perhaps best known as one half of the duo Mark and Lard with fellow DJ Mark Radcliffe, who together presented the late evening show Out on Blue Six on BBC Radio 1, before moving on to the breakfast show in 1997, and finally to the 1pm to 3pm slot in January 1998, presenting their final show on the station in 2004.
After leaving Radio 1, the duo cordially went their separate ways; with Riley moving to BBC 6 Music, and Radcliffe to BBC Radio 2.
Riley can currently be heard on BBC 6 Music, where he presents Brain Surgery on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday evenings and Mint with Rob Hughes on Sunday evenings.
Mark and Lard have also released two comedy/parody albums under the guise of The Shirehorses:
Preceded by Chris Evans |
BBC Radio One Breakfast Show Presenter 1997 |
Succeeded by Kevin Greening and Zoe Ball |
