Marcus Fenix is a fictional soldier and principal character in the Xbox 360 game, Gears of War. In the storyline, Fenix leads a squad of human inhabitants of the planet Sera, fighting a subterranean enemy known as the Locust Horde. He is voiced by John DiMaggio, however in the X05 Trailer (and possibly the early beta versions of the game), he was voiced by Steven Jay Blum.^[1]

Son of famed military scientist Adam Fenix, Marcus established a reputation as a brilliant soldier during the Pendulum Wars, earning field promotions and decorations. He was on a fast track to an outstanding military career, until the war with the Locust Horde began.^[2]

One long decade after Emergence Day, the Horde Army breached Jacinto Plateau's defenses and Marcus defied orders so he could save his father. He was too late, and in addition to losing his father, who was murdered by General RAAM, Marcus was charged with dereliction of duty and was sentenced to 40 years in Jacinto Maximum Security Penitentiary. It's later shown that Marcus's father was mapping the underground tunnels of the Locust Horde (a detail integral to the plot of Gears of War), although it's never revealed whether Marcus was aware of how important his father's research was when he attempted to save him, or whether he specifically knew it related to the Locust Horde.

Four years into his sentence, the Horde overtook the Jacinto Penintentiary, but Marcus was rescued by his best friend, Dominic Santiago, so that he could join the fight against the Locust Horde Army. Marcus Fenix is 35 years old at the start of the Gears of War campaign.

[edit] Act 1

In Act 1, Marcus gets freed from Jacinto Maximum Security Prison by his best friend, Dominic "Dom" Santiago. With Dom's help, Marcus escapes the prison (which the Locust Horde overran not long ago) by a slim margin, almost being killed by a Locust Corpser during the escape. He joins Delta Squadron, which consists of Dom, Private Carmine, and Lieutenant Minh Young Kim. The majority of the Act consists of Delta Squad's search for the missing Alpha Squad, and retrieving the sonic resonator held by Alpha, which could map the Locust tunnel network, and give the COG the ability to strike the Locust where they are most vulnerable. While moving through the House of Sovereigns, Carmine is killed by sniper fire, but Alpha Squad's Private Augustus "Cole Train" Cole fills in the missing slot. The team continues through The House, and find the rest of Alpha squad in the Tomb of the Unknowns. During the rescue, General RAAM, of the Locust horde and a Locust platoon attack Alpha and Delta squads, and RAAM kills Lieutenant Kim. Alpha and Delta flee into the tomb, where they must now deal with a Locust Berserker which by now had broken free of its' restraints. Marcus and Dom lead the creature outside the tomb, and kill it with an aligned orbital laser named the Hammer of Dawn guided by a hand-held targeting device. The two survivors of Alpha Squad, Cole and Private Damon Baird join Delta, and Marcus is promoted to Seargent and is given control of Delta Squad by Hoffman. The squad is now ordered to proceed to the Lethia Imulsion Facility to deploy the resonator.

Fenix and his squad head to a settlement populated by Stranded, civilians who are caught outside of COG authority. Dom has had contact with one of the Stranded named Franklin and intends to call in a favor: the use of his vehicle, hoping they can use it to reach Lethia sooner. The machine being quite valuable to the survivors, Cole and Baird are left behind as collateral. As darkness falls over the city, the Locust Horde is no longer their only problem: night-time brings out the ravenous, bat-like Kryll, that are extremely sensitive to light. Fenix and Dom venture across the battle-scarred ruins of the city trying to avoid the Kryll by blasting propane tanks to illuminate their path and repel the creatures. Eventually Fenix and Dom reach the gas station where the vehicle is located. They fight off a small force of Locusts with the help of the station's owner and take off with the vehicle just as enemy reinforcements arrive.They drive off into a highway while being pursued by a large swarm of Kryll, eliminating the swarm using the vehicle's Ultraviolet light projection turret. Fenix and Dom reach the camp and are reunited with Cole and Baird, where they fend off another attack by the Locust.

The chapter begins with Delta Squad outside the gates of the Imulsion refinery during a heavy downpour. As they approach the factory, Fenix and the squad glimpses Locust Wretches that appear to glow in the dark. Anya informs them that these Wretches have had prolonged exposure to Imulsion and are subsequently volatile. In fact, upon death their bodies explode. The team splits up: Fenix and Dom gain entry through the roof, Cole and Baird through the basement. While Marcus and Dom are in the factory, they encounter a Stranded. The Stranded shows them the way to the cart control room, but meets an unfortunate demise by falling through a floorboard to a horde of hungry Wretches below. They fight their way through the factory and gain entry into the mine, which is regarded as enemy territory, with a quick mine-cart ride. After Marcus defeats a Locust Corpser, the squad finds the Imulsion pumping station which will provide their escape. The newly dispatched Theron Guards fortify the station, and once it's secured, the resonator is detonated while the squad quickly returns to the surface.

Unfortunately, the resonator fails to deliver complete results: the data obtained is only a fragment of what is needed. While inspecting a Geobot he recovered from underground, Baird discovers that it contains mapping data that is far more extensive than what the resonator provided. The origin of the Geobot is quickly determined to be East Barricade Academy, from the workstation of Fenix's own father. Delta Squad is quickly dispatched to search for this laboratory.

[edit] Act 4

Marcus' father, Adam Fenix, was a top military scientist and in this mission Marcus must return to his former home, in an attempt to retrieve the research Adam was working on. The research turns out to be a complete map of the Locust tunnels. After Marcus and Dom find this extraordinary data, they get JACK to copy the data then meet up Baird and Cole fighting the swarm of Locusts attacking the Fenix Estate. Baird and Cole then leave to acquire the APC found and repaired by Baird and bring it to the front of the house to escape. Marcus and Dom fend off attacks until a legion of Locusts attack but Baird and Cole show up just in time to save the pair. They then manage to escape a gruesome death from a mighty Brumak.

[edit] Act 5

Fenix must lead his squad- now carrying the targeting data for the lightmass bomb- onto a train which had been attacked by Locust. There, he must enter the targeting data retrieved from the mansion into the bomb. The stage culminates in a final showdown with General RAAM. When Marcus Fenix defeats General RAAM, he activates the lightmass bomb. Dom jumps into an oncoming helicopter and yells at Marcus to hurry up and jump in. With the speed of the train increasing, Marcus has trouble keeping his balance and at one point, the helicopter sways far from the train. But it soon retains its position near Marcus. As the train is about to fall from the broken bridge up ahead, Marcus jumps into the helicopter, successfully, just as the train falls from the bridge. The lightmass bomb activates and sends missiles heading through the holes deep underground that soon detonate. Dom then says, "So, what are we doing tomorrow?" and then a voice is heard, the queen of the Locust army, and sets the stage for a possible sequel.

• It appears that at one time in development, Marcus Fenix had a slightly different appearance. Early game art and renders show that he was originally bald, had brown eyes, and did not have any facial hair. Despite having facial hair and hair added onto Marcus, many magazine ads still displayed him with his original look. ^[3][4]
