From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mark Hinge (born August 11th, 1980 in London, England) is a well known British computer security writer, researcher, hacker and one of the founders of the Whitedust Security portal(together with Mark Anderson). His online handle is ‘psg’. Although he has written numerous articles and musings he is most widely known for two which were distributed on the Whitedust portal, these being his “Hacking Art Or Science” paper (linked from the Wiki page for ‘Hacker’) and his research paper on the Darkmail attack vector which was originally published before the phrase Darkmail was even coined.
[edit] Background
Previous to working for Whitedust Mark operated within the ‘text file’ scene using the handle ‘|PaRiS|’ writing for various ezines including The Discordant Opposition Journal and later going on to edit the biggest ‘UK Underground’ ezine called The Soljo – both of these publications are still in circulation and occasionally release new material.
Mark has appeared a number of times on BBC Radio shows as a guest speaker on subjects such as hacking and the Gary Mckinnon case.
Mark is a founding member of the hacker group The Syndicate Of London and acknowledged as the main brains behind it's so called "Propaganda Machine" - in this way and others he is well respected for his online marketing skills; the Whitedust.net portal for example is known for never having ever had an advertising budget and yet is still a high traffic highly rated site. Mark is also known for being very adept in publisiing and promoting news and ideas that would often otherwise be over looked and gaining them considerable exposure. Despite this praise he is quoted as calling online marketing "The Dark Arts."
As of December 2006 Mark is also a member of the world famous Cult Of The Dead Cow Ninja Strike Force.
Notable papers actually written by Mark include his commentary on the Katie.com fiasco (which was quoted by the owner of katie.com), and his Brief History & Guide to the UK Underground Scene which is listed in the historical section of Jason Scott Sadofsky’s textfiles.com.
Cult Of The Dead Cow recently published Mark's review of their book "The Book of Cao" on the books distribution site.
Mark Hinge also works for a media solutions company called [Sidhe Solutions] and developed the Gypsy USB Toolkit for The Syndicate Of London.
He is also the co-editor of The Syndicate Of London's first print book [" End Of Dayz] which was released on the 10th of December 2006. The book is described as "An eclectic collection of underground text files compiled from Soljo Publishing’s full 1992 to 2006 run - a snapshot of creativity and opinion from the digital jilted generation, right from the ASCII edge and onto your bookshelf. Hacking, politics, science, fiction and humour from the group that brought you The Soljo, The Discordant Opposition Journal, SPACT and the RWM Collective. A must read for any self respecting old school geek, or indeed any geek interested in the history and traditions of underground geekdom. Internet counter culture at it's best."
