The Maryland Democratic Party is the state affiliate of the United States Democratic Party in the U.S. State of Maryland. The current state party chairman is Terry Lierman.
It was originally founded on May 21, 1827 by supporters of Andrew Jackson, although it functioned at the time as a candidate campaign committee in Jackson's successful 1828 bid for the presidency rather than as a party committee. Baltimore soon became an important city in national Democratic Party politics and played host to the Party's first six conventions.
