[edit] About
Unlike a traditional online or multiplayer first person shoot out, a MMOFPS can use interconnected zones or areas to create a larger world in which thousands of players can interact.
Due to the technical issues introduced with large numbers of simultaneous players, few MMOFPS games have been developed. MMOFPS games tend to require more powerful computers than MMORPGs to meet the demands of faster gameplay. MMOFPS developers also have to be more concerned about lag since reaction times must be swift and MMOG servers tend to be in a centralized location (which might not be convenient for players a long distance from there).
As with many massively multiplayer games, most MMOFPS games charge a monthly fee to play. This pays for the maintenance costs for the servers and bandwidth as well as a "live" development team to update the game and fix bugs as needed. There are a number of free MMOFPS. These often have fewer people playing however, partially due to the high price required to host many servers.

[edit] The Chronicles of Spellborn
Main Article: Wikiborn
The Chronicles of Spellborn is an MMOFPS computer game developed by Spellborn International Ltd. (formally Khaeon Games). Unlike most other MMOFPS games, the setting takes place in a world of might and magic. Combat itself requires you to use skills regulated by a skill deck. A skill deck at maximum level has six tiers and you will only be able to access six skills at a time in a tier. With more skills than can be fitted into the 36 slots of a skill deck there is a deeper meta game involved in this form of sword wielding magic flinging combat.
Inspired by works such as Conan, the Labyrinth and Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser TCoS creates a unique setting where players aren't separated by race but by political parties known as High Houses. Each House has their own set of beliefs and mores that define their vision for the Enclave and as a result not only have agendas that run counter to the objectives of enemies outside the Enclave but also with friends, families and fellow citizens within.
It is currently in closed beta and will release in Europe on May 2007. It will release in North America and Asia soon afterwards.
[edit] Darkfall
Darkfall is the only other MMOFPS computer game to offer a mix of swordmanship, archery and magic. Developed by Aventurine SA, Darkfall is a counterpoint against the prevaling trends of MMOs to follow the Everquest model over the Ultima Online model of player interaction with the world.
The levelling system, the inability to fight players anywhere, intentional limitations on crafting which hinders player driven economies are among a few of the things Darkfall eschews to make a gaming world suited to allowing players to do as they please.
While their focus is on creating the tools for players needed to form their own cities, forts, trade caravans and naval fleets they are determined to create npc driven content that draws players into their setting of the world. With mobs that move from location to location in reaction to player encroachment on their territory and mobs taking your possessions if they defeat you in combat, npcs are intended to be perceived as more life like than previous games.
