[edit] Building
The building is renowned for its "open spaces," which were large open areas with moveable walls. Less than half of the buildings classrooms were in open spaces and the rest were triangular in shape. The school was built by a builder who also built prisons and the design reflects this. Numerous classrooms contain no windows and masonry is the main building material. The windows in the select few classrooms are plentiful, yet most don't open. There is a constantly running air circulation system to combat the window problem and this also cools the building in the summer.
[edit] School Life
In addition, The school has several succesful sports programs, the most notable being the recent success of the women's volleyball and women's basketball teams. Also notable are its wide array of clubs, many of which are active within the community. The Megatones, a special after-school choral group directed by Joseph Messina, often perform in the area for a range of audiences. The Drama Club, headed by Tanja Hiti, put on several yearly performances and participate in the annual drama festival put on by the Massachusetts High School Drama Guild. The Sci-Fi Club films and produces their own short science fiction films, assisted by Christopher Chandler and Leonard Caplan. The Melrose High School marching band competes in NESBA competitions every year and plays at home football games.
