Mentone Grammar School (formerly known as simply The Boys' Grammar in the local community) is an independent grammar school in Mentone, Melbourne. The school was founded in 1923, and up until 2006 Mentone Grammar was a boys-only school. The school announced its co-educational intent in July 2005. The School has adopted an untested parallel learning approach, where boys and girls are together from Kindergarten-Grade 5 and from Grade 5-Year 9 the two are separate, and in the VCE years, Years 10-12, there are mixed classes again. The school was once the best boys school in the area. The co-ed controversy resulted in the formaition of the MGSPA - Mentone Grammar Schools Parents Association. The choice to go co-educational also meant changes for its sister school, Mentone Girls Grammar. Mentone Grammar is located on Venice Street in the Melbourne Bayside suburb of Mentone.
In December 2006, Headmaster Tim Argall lost his job, with the school's board citing "irreconcilable differences". The bayside school attracted widespread attention in 2005 when it announced plans to enroll girls, after a merger proposal was rejected by nearby Mentone Girls' Grammar School. The move prompted a deep rift with the the School community and led to a damaging media campaign.
In 2006 Mentone Grammar had 161 female students out of a total of 977 students, and the board expects the numbers for boys and girls to grow in 2007. The school currently has not appointed a headmaster however there have been numerous applications for the job.
The Mentone Grammar School Cadet Unit is now 64 years old, and once boasted strength of nearly 400, making it one of the biggest Cadet units in Australia. However, now only 6 days in the year are dedicated to cadets, and training is rushed for the approx 110 students involved.
