Mike Procter (born Michael John Procter September 15, 1946) was a South African cricketer.
As a bowler, Procter had an awkward action, bowling off the wrong foot. He generally bowled at some pace, but later in his career knee problems forced him to turn to off-spin, at which he also proved accomplished. As a batsman, he arguably could have been able to find a place in most Test teams on batting talent alone, as evidenced by his scoring six centuries in successive first-class innings for Rhodesia in 1970/71.
The ban on South Africa in international cricket restricted his Test career to seven appearances, all of them against Australia, between 1967 and 1970. 41 Test wickets at an average of 15.02 suggest what he might have achieved in the coming years had South Africa been allowed to play at the highest level. Along with Barry Richards and Graeme Pollock, Procter was responsible in his side inflicting two successive series defeats on Australia by margins of 3-1 and 4-0. He played county cricket for many years as an overseas player for Gloucestershire (Captain 1977-1981) and enjoyed much success. Fans even jokingly renamed the team Proctershire.
[edit] Trivia
Procter's 109 innings of not out in Gloucestershire's 135/3 in the 1974 John Player League makes this the lowest team total in List A cricket to include a century.[2]
