Mohammed "Mo" George (born Mohammad Michael George in 1982 in Hackney, London, England) is an actor who has played Gus Smith on the soap opera EastEnders since May 2002. Gus is rarely involved in major storylines; however, is quite often seen carrying out his duties as a roadsweeper. Before appearing in EastEnders, George made guest appearances in Holby City and The Last Detective.
George has a daughter, Olivia, from his relationship with Emma Archibald. His daughter was born in 2005, unexpectedly as both parents were unaware that Archibald was pregnant.[citation needed]
George was arrested on 8 December 2006 for a suspected assault on Archibald during an argument outside a restaurant.[1] She, however, has dismissed these claims, saying he did not attack her, but they had simply been arguing over who should empty the dishwasher.[2] Additionally, George has stated he feels racism to be the motive for the way the incident has been treated in the press.[citation needed] Despite these serious claims of racism, George went onto admit the assault, apologise to the victim and was cautioned by the police. [3] George was subsequently suspended by EastEnders Executive Producer Diederick Santer for two months, appologised to the BBC and the shows producers but hasn't as yet apologised for citing Racism in whats been referred to as "a cynical attempt to deflect attention from his crime."[4]
