From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Moyshe-Leyb Halpern (1886, Zlotshev, Galicia–1932) was an American Yiddish poet. Having grown up with a traditional Jewish upbringing in eastern Europe, Halpern began writing modernist poetry in German while living in Vienna. Upon returning to his hometown, he switched to writing in Yiddish.
In 1908, he emigrated to New York City in order to avoid the military draft. There he became associated with a group of Yiddish poets called Di Yunge (The Young Ones). His poems examined the impoverished condition of New York's immigrant community.
