National Urban Runoff Program

The National Urban Runoff Program (NURP) was a U.S. Government report on pollutants found in stormwater runoff in urban areas. It was based on a study of 2300 storms in 28 major metropolitan areas between 1977 and 1983.
In 1987, the results of the report were used as the basis of an amendment to the Clean Water Act requiring local government to address the pollution sources indicated by the report.
According to the NURP, the most common sources of urban stormwater pollution are industrial discharges, illicit discharges and dumping, construction site runoff, and commercial and residential properties [1]
