[edit] Details
I can use Jdorje's track map generator to generate track maps for tropical cyclones. To see the technical details of the program or to find out how to use it yourself see his page on the program. This page is to provide instructions on how to get me to create a track map for you.
[edit] Instructions
- If you want me to make a track map for a specific storm or season, do not leave a message here, just add {{storm path needed}} to the article which will place it in Category:Hurricane articles needing a track map.
- If you want me to make track maps for every storm in a season, add {{storm path needed}} to the start of the storms section. I will only produce the track maps for a whole season if every storm in the season has a section in the seasonal article.
- If you want a track map for a Tropical Depression, please provide an source such as the NHC TCR or JTWC archive.
- If you want me to make a cumulative track map for a specific set of storms, do the following:
- For each storm you want included in the map ensure you have the name of the storm or its NHC/JTWC ID number.
- Create a new section, with an appropriate name, at the bottom of the Current requests section.
- Write the following information for each storm on an individual line: Year, name or ID number and basin (if needed).
- Sign your request with ~~~~.
I will then be able to create the track map and inform you when it is uploaded to Commons.
[edit] Current requests
- Per-basin track maps for Tropical cyclone basins, as discussed on IRC. Titoxd(?!?) 04:56, 25 February 2007 (UTC)
- Right now I'm awake I know the problems with this: Its crossovers. Do we want to handle basin crossovers by showing them only in the basin being discussed? For example, Ioke's track only showing the EPac portion. If so what do we do with John '94? Should we only have the two EPac segments? If we always show complete tracks for storms crossing basins the by-basin tracks for the SWIO and SEIO would contain many, many such storms. The other problem of course, a rigorous definition of the SHem basins would be good, I can't do it without that. Where's the line between SW and SE IO, is it the WMO RA I/V boundary (RA I has suggested altering it). And the other one, where does the IO end and the SPacDo begin? Are all the waters north of Australia in one or the other basin, which basin if any is the Gulf of Carpentaria in? Theres also the issue of the SW/SEPac is the eastern boundary the WMO one? (If so good, no issue there).
- A possible way out is to just show all TCs regardless of crossover issues. Add longitude lines to show the E/W limits of the basin. The crop heavily against the boundaries, leaving a limited border around the basin of interest. As an example see commons:Image:1999 Pacific typhoon season map.jpg and in particular how Dora is handled. Of course, that doesn't help define the E limit of SEIO and W limit of SPac (if they coincide or not)--Nilfanion (talk) 11:28, 25 February 2007 (UTC)
- The second way is better, IMO. A Pacific hurricane becomes a Pacific typhoon once it crosses the date line, so there's no point in excluding EPac crossovers from the WPac and CPac. Also, it's not like we will be able to distinguish individual track maps anyways. Titoxd(?!?) 21:54, 26 February 2007 (UTC)
- Well, I can distinguish a lot of the tracks ;) I've uploaded the images to commons:Image:Atlantic hurricane tracks 1980-2005.jpg, commons:Image:Pacific hurricane tracks 1980-2005.jpg, commons:Image:Pacific typhoon tracks 1980-2005.jpg, commons:Image:North Indian Ocean cyclone tracks 1980-2005.jpg, commons:Image:Southwest Indian Ocean cyclone tracks 1980-2005.jpg, commons:Image:Southeast Indian Ocean cyclone tracks 1980-2005.jpg and commons:Image:South Pacific cyclone tracks 1980-2005.jpg. This period is to match the global track and to prevent systematic bias, as was discussed with the global one. Any problem with these or do you want tweaking?--Nilfanion (talk) 21:49, 27 February 2007 (UTC)
