No Strings is a charity organisation, founded by Johnie McGlade, which focuses on teaching life-saving messages to children in underprivileged countries through puppetry in an entertaining and culturally sensitive way.
The main issues that No Strings focus on in their aid work are:
- landmine safety awareness,
- HIV and AIDS education,
- healthcare, and
- issues faced by children on the street[1].
The idea of providing aid through puppetry stemmed from an Irish puppet called Seamus, owned by McGlade, which he carried it around with him in his travels in the hope that he might make use of it in some way. While working for Irish humanitarian agency Goal in Sudan, McGlade brought the puppet with him to feeding centres in the area and saw that the it was an instant sensation among the children. McGlade was later introduced to Michael Frith and Kathryn Mullen, members of the original Muppets team, and the idea of providing aid to children through puppetry was put in motion.
The No Strings headquarters are located in the UK (No Strings International). There is a smaller branch in Ireland (No Strings Ireland).
No Strings shares affiliations with various charity organisations around the world:
