Ochoa brothers
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Ochoa brothers (Fabio, Jorge Luis Ochoa Vázquez, Ariel and Juan David) were members of the Medellín Cartel, led by Pablo Escobar. Their association with the cartel dated from around 1975 until after the death of Fabio Ochoa Restrepo, the patriarch of the Ochoa family although he was never associated with the Medellín Cartel himself. Restrepo died of kidney failure in 2002.
The Ochoa brothers were among the most powerful cocaine kingpins until the Medellín cartel was torn apart by the US Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), their Cali Cartel rivals, and U.S intelligence. All three turned themselves in after Colombian president Cesar Gaviria promised amnesty for any drug cartel members who gave up. Later, when Escobar escaped from his La Catedral prison, the DEA tried to encourage the Ochoas to give them information leading to Escobar's capture. Their attempts met with little success.
According to Mexican authorities, Fabio Ochoa still fraternizes with some traffickers in the "Milenio Cartel" (Millennium Cartel in English), so called because it appeared in the year 2000. The "Milenio Cartel" reportedly operates throughout Mexico, sending out regular shipments of cocaine.
