Early presidential and legislative elections were threatened to be called in Palestine by the President of the Palestinian National Authority Mahmoud Abbas after the negotiations on a unity government consisting of his Fatah and the Hamas failed in late 2006 (for more information on the recent conflict between Fatah and Hamas, see Palestinian factional violence).[1] The elections were not to take place before March 2007, and could even have been delayed until mid-2007.[2] While Hamas had rejected the plans for early elections and had threatened to boycott them,[3] Israel,[4] Russia,[5] the United Kingdom[6] and the United States[7] had voiced their support.
According to a poll from mid-December 2006, the election would have been very close,[8] while a poll from late December 2006 had showed a strong lead for Fatah,[9] as had another poll from late January 2007.[10]
Since Fatah and Hamas agreed on a unity government in early February 2007, these early elections were not called.
