Patrick Joseph Walsh D.D. M.A. S.T.L., is Catholic Bishop of The Diocese of Down and Connor. He was born in 1931 at Cobh, Republic of Ireland.

He received Secondary Education at St Mary's CBGS and did his Senior Leaving Certificate in English, Latin, Irish, Maths, Additional Maths, Algebra, Trigonometry, Geometry, Calculus and Chemistry.
In 1948 he was the Winner of a State Exhibition (Scientific), Senior Leaving Certificate and Winner of a State Exhibition (Literary), Senior Leaving Certificate and awarded a University Scholarship
He then attended Queen’s University, Belfast; Christ's College, Cambridge, Pontifical Lateran University, Rome and was ordained priest on 25th Feb 1956.
He was assigned as a Mathematics teacher at St MacNissi’s College, Garron Tower 1958-64; then Chaplain at Queen’s University, Belfast 1964-70; and finally as President of St. Malachy's College. 1970-83. Today he is Chairman of the Board of Governors for St. Malachy's College.
He is seen as a tradionalist in his approach to the Liturgy, Theology and Morality/Ethics but is known to be sympathetic to the struggle in peoples' day to day living and so is well-loved in Belfast. During the Troubles he made a point of visiting victims' families and consoling the bereaved.

In 1983, he was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of The Diocese of Down and Connor and was consecrated on the 15th March by Bishop Cahal Daly, Archbishop Gaetano Alibrandi and William Philbin. He was given the Titular See of Ros Cré.
In 1991, on the elevation of the then Bishop of Down & Connor Cahal Daly as Archbishop of Armagh, Dr Walsh became Bishop of Down & Connor.
He has been the Principal Consecrator of Bishop Michael Dallat and Bishop Donal McKeown.
He is currently a member of the Irish Bishops Conference on Bioethics and Chairman on Culture.

He has taken a hard line against British Government plans to reform education in the North, and has warned that any attempt to dilute the ethos of Catholic Schools would not be tolerated.
Early in 2006 Dr. Walsh tendered his resignation to the Vatican, and is still waiting for Pope Benedict XVI to appoint his successor.
He was one of the Bishops that travelled to Rome for their Quinquennial Visit Ad Limina visit in October 2006. During the Visit, Dr Walsh was The Chief Celebrant at Mass in the Pontifical Irish College on Sunday morning, 22nd October.
