From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Persian Wikipedia (Persian: ویکیپدیا، دانشنامهٔ آزاد, Vikipedia, Daneshname-ye Azad meaning Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia) is the Persian language version of Wikipedia. The Persian version of Wikipedia started in January 2004. It passed the border of 1,000 articles on 16 December 2004 (26 Adhar 1383 Hsh) and the 10,000 mark on 18 February 2006 (29 Bahman 1384). As of March 8, 2007 it has 18,534 articles.
The Persian Wikipedia was started by Roozbeh Pournader with the help of other students of Sharif University, a public university of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
As the Persian language is written in a variant of the Arabic alphabet (the Perso-Arabic script) which is written from right to left, so is the website.
The Persian Wikipedia has been among the fast-growing Wikipedia projects.
