[edit] Pocky Flavors List

Hi all, Im going to replace the list with a paragraph about certain flavors as I feel that the list distracts from the article. If you don't like this feel free to revert. Graxe 16:36, 17 February 2006 (UTC)

In that case, then why not create another wiki page with a full list of Pocky flavors? I went to a comic book place, and there is a whole lot of new flavors, and the one I tasted is "Green Tea" flavor. --Seishirou Sakurazuka 22:15, 26 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Pepero vs. Pocky

Hi, Why does 'Pepero' redirects me to this 'Pocky' page? They are not the same brand nor the same thing. One is for Korea, One is for Japan...... I am looking for Pepero, not Pocky.

[edit] Pocky

I heard somewhere that it is a tradition to, when two people are eating pocky and the last stick is reached, for them to share it by eating it from opposite ends, eventually ending in a Lady and the Tramp-styled kiss. Is this true? It's adorable anyway. 67.168.34.86 00:39, 19 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Is pocky pronounced how it's spelled? My brother says it's pronounced 'Pokey' and I want to prove him wrong once and for all. 67.160.75.230 21:12, 13 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Yes, I believe it is pronounced the way it's spelled. The Japanese may pronouce it a little different (like it generally happens with Japanese), but I'm pretty sure that's the right way. If you want to know they way the say it in Japanese, you can probably listen to it on one of those flash intros on Pocky's official site. You can find a link for it on the article. – Mackeriv 22:59, 13 Jun 2004 (UTC)
The English way rhymes with 'hocky' (at least as I've heard it), and the Japanese way is like poke-key ... so both you and your brother are sort-of right. solvent 01:09, 27 July 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Worldwide

Does anyone know about Pocky's presence in parts of the world other than East Asia and the USA? Pyrop 18:12, Sep 14, 2004 (UTC)

I have no idea. I just wonder what the hell you think you meant with "depoving and defanboying". I can see you added new, technical content, yes, but what kind of POV issues and fanboy rantings were you expecting to be removing with that? Everything you saw there was pretty much true and nothing was blurred with personal opinions. Now, if you think the article was infested with "fanboy" content... well, perhaps you should point that. I'm sure many other people would like to know your opinion about this as well. – Kaonashi 20:22, 14 Sep 2004 (UTC)
"this ageless snack.", "people who appreciate the Japanese culture", and the out-of-proportion focus on its fame among anime fans, mostly. I'm sorry if i was rude, but don't take it too personally. Pyrop 03:22, Sep 15, 2004 (UTC)
Most people who know about Pocky tend to believe that the main force who drove that knowledge of the snack to the west was anime. It might be unfair to give too much attention to anime on the article (which I believe didn't occur), but for us, it was important. It's not sold in America (only via importation), so a lot of people could only acknowledge it after seeing parodies on anime/manga (myself included). Also, it becamed somewhat of a little cult among fans, so I though adding the "culture" line would be appropriate. I agree that the "ageless" part sounds too much like something that came out of a commercial. It wasn't me who put it there. I did see it before, but didn't bother removing it.
I see your point, and if you think it's better to leave the article impartial to these things, perhaps it is. Just felt like explaining my views. – Kaonashi 04:05, 15 Sep 2004 (UTC)
Well, the thing is, to the Japanese, who are the main market for Pocky, Pocky has no association with Anime. It's as common as Hershey Bars there. Pocky's noteriety among American anime fans is a small footnote compared to its success in Japan. Pyrop 04:41, Sep 15, 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Not joke links

I folded these really!

Image:Http://homepage.mac.com/pockyrevolution/pockyandcellphone.jpg

Image:Http://homepage.mac.com/pockyrevolution/pockyandkey.jpg

Or do these things just not belong in wikipedia.

Those things don't belong in Wikipedia. The article is about Pocky, and not about small folded things which read "Pocky"; people coming to the article want to find out about the snack. Wikipedia is not a place for original artwork. mendel 03:08, Nov 6, 2004 (UTC)

[edit] "Fanboying", revisited

I just noticed something I should have seen a long time ago:

"The fame behind Pocky lies on several reasons. Its constant association with the Engrish phenomenon and the oddness of some of its versions (like the "Men's Pocky" bittersweet flavour), as well as the several Pocky parodies seem on many anime/manga series, contribute for the worldwide reputation of this snack."

Am I the only one who thinks this reflects the reality of Pocky in the west, and that it shows no fanboying at all? It is true. Why take it off of the article and reduce it to almost nothing there? It might be as common as Hershey bars in the US, though for Japan, but you know what, this is the English Wikipedia. It should reflect much of what we experience in our reality. It might not be notable to the Japanese, but it is for us. And what plays a major role on that is, yes, anime and manga. So in sum, I think that bit of text shouldn't have been taken off the article. It looks crippled now, the way it is. It doesn't even say why it is popular among Japanophiles and anime fans there, which frankly, is pretty odd, in the very least. If what I'm saying isn't enough, I have a couple of posts up there. More info on them.

I'd like to see the opinion of other people on this. Thank you.--Kaonashi 02:38, 14 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Due to the lack of comment by other people, I've returned that paragraph to the article. If anyone has an argument against this in the future, it can be discussed here. Thanks.--Kaonashi 18:33, 12 Apr 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Referenes in Popular Culture

I am a little too lazy to do a search on it now, but I know that Megatokyo has made references to Pocky. Many of the popular webcomics bring out Pocky jokes around the times of conventions and it is has become a popular joke topic. I have seen Real Life also make Pocky references. I cannot remember if PvP has made one, but I would not be surprised if it has.

The popularity of Pocky as an otaku fascination has probably transferred to include webcomics and the webcomic world (specifically Penny Arcade and Megatokyo) are now completely fascinated with it.

I cannot pull references to any actual comics because I am late for work and extremely lazy.  :)MrHen 14:32, 20 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] A signifigant presence in Korea?

Does anyone have a source for this (or, if you live in or have been to Korea, have you seen it)? I lived in Korea for six years, and never saw a box of Pocky -- not in the big chain stores or otherwise. --Zonath 06:37, 1 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Fish

Does anyone have a source on Pocky's fish content? Queerwiki 23:13, 10 May 2006 (UTC)

I would assume the ingredients list on a box of the stuff would be a pretty good source for that. I'll check next time I go where they have some, assuming nobody beats me to it. --Zonath 06:10, 11 May 2006 (UTC)

I was sitting here with a box of "Men's Pocky" when I wrote that comment and the English ingredients said nothing about fish, just "shortening". Perhaps the Japanese is more specific but somehow I doubt it. That's why I was wondering about a source. Queerwiki 06:28, 13 May 2006 (UTC)

Bump. I still can't find a source that Pocky contains fish. Queerwiki 19:39, 27 May 2006 (UTC)

Strawberry Pocky, at the very least, contains partially hydrogenated fish oil, but I haven't found the ingredient listed on boxes for other types of Pocky (although I haven't looked very hard). --Zonath 23:25, 17 July 2006 (UTC)

I've got a box of strawbery pocky in front of me- no fish here. "Hydrogenated vegetable oil," as well as "Shortening," but no fish oil that I can see. 64.114.168.248 03:38, 19 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] is the Volcan 3000 in Zatch Bell! based on Pocky?

There is an anime series called Zatch Bell! in which one of the commonly seen items is a handmade toy called the "Volcan 3000". Superficially, its design is very much like that of a Pocky box, except that it seems a bit wider and has glued on limbs. Would anybody know if this toy is in fact a cultural reference to Pocky boxes? --Tachikoma 15:13, 7 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Pocky motto?

Okay in every pocky commercial there is a motto or tradmark they say in every pocky commercial at the end right before they crunch into it. WHat is that motto? does anyone here know?

[edit] Men's Pocky

I think they changed it for the North American versions. I just bought some Dark Chocolate pocky, and it just says Pocky on it now. This makes me sad... :P SKS2K6 06:56, 9 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Places to find Pocky

Just wondering if this was notable:
I go across the (american/canadian) border a lot and I've noticed different variations of (actually japanese) pocky in FYE in Buffalo, and dark chocolate (clearly produced for north america) pocky in Zehrs (a chain of grocery stores) in St. Catharines, Ontario.
Is that remotely significant? Or is the subject covered enough by now? Bladestorm 04:33, 9 February 2007 (UTC)
