Production packer
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A production packer is a standard component of the completion of an oil or gas well used to isolate the annulus from the formation.
It is usually run in close to the bottom end of the production tubing and set at a point above the top perforations or sand screens. Metals slips hold the packer to the walls of the casing and rubber O-rings provide a seal to prevent fluids moving from the foot of the completion (the part of the well below the packer in contact with the reservoir into the annulus or the other way round.
Most packers are "permanent" and require milling in order to remove in the case of a workover. Some packers can be retrievable, with shearable components allowing for easy removal and subsequent servicing for reuse.
