Queen's Arcade
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Queen's Arcade (Welsh: ArcĂȘd y Frenhines) is a shopping centre in Cardiff, opened April 28 1994. It connects with St. David's Centre
The arcade has two levels, and is unusual in that the levels are sloped, so that despite its two entrances being on the same level, the upper floor at one entrance is the ground floor at the other.
A remodelling exercise has recently been completed, involving the creation of another 3 shop units and the change to a single level entrance onto Queen Street (this to free up space for the 3 new units). As a result the Queen Street end has a much more contemporary look to the Hayes end, as the faux city hall style windows have been replaced with big, clear floor to ceiling glass panels, allowing you to see right into the arcade from as far away as the Hilton Hotel. Other than this the rest of the Arcade remains unchanged, although at the time of the remodel announcment it was said that the whole arcade would get a fresh image. It will have to if it is to avoid losing out on big name retailers to the upcoming St Davids 2 development and the spate of newly built or refurbished properties appearing on Queen Street.
Prior to the remodel, it was used for location shooting in the 2005 Doctor Who story Rose, starring Christopher Eccleston and Billie Piper, which was set in London.
