R143 (New York City Subway car)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

R143 is the designation given to the newest generation of IND/BMT New York City Subway cars,. Contract awarded to Kawasaki Heavy Industries of Kobe, Japan. These cars have interior appointments (door motors, strip maps, grab bars, etc.) similar to the R142A, and they incorporate much of the R110B New Technology Train's advanced features.
The primary order included 100 cars with an option order of an additional 112 cars. They began to arrive in late 2001. The first train of R143 cars, 8101-8108, went into passenger service for its thirty-day acceptance test on December 4, 2001. The order was complete by April, 2003. The R143 cars are in 4-car sets to be used on the BMT Eastern Division, particularly the L service, which is being resignaled to take advantage of the R143's CBTC capability. The M service also uses the R143 cars, but only on weekends for four-car shuttles between Myrtle Avenue and Middle Village–Metropolitan Avenue in "One Person Train Operation" (OPTO).
Cars #8101-8312 have all been built. These cars have similar features to their R142A IRT counterparts. There are some differences:
- These cars have a single end door instead of a double-door.
- These cars have been programmed for and have the capability to employ Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC).
- The train has side LED orange signs, not LCD yellow signs as on the R142As.
- These cars are 60 feet long, compared to the 51 feet 4 inches of the IRT fleet.
- They have LED "moving ads" that show MetroCard information and announcements, such as the MTA's "Step Aside and Speed Your Ride" campaign.
- Cars #8205-8212 had Siemens AC Traction Motors, for testing purposes. They have now reverted back to the AdTranz Propulsion system.
