Note that this illustration includes an interneuron in the patellar reflex arc. The patellar reflex is monosynaptic (there is no interneuron), but the neurons are commonly drawn this way to demonstrate the concept of an interneuron for educational purposes. The inhibitory component of the reflex arc involving the hamstring muscle is not shown for simplicity.
