[edit] About the game

The game pitches a series of Marvel heroes and villains, including Captain America, Venom, Wolverine, Dr. Doom, Iron Man, and Spider-Man against a series of original Marvel-owned, EA-created characters. Combat is simplified in favor of allowing the player greater movement, and the game is already drawing comparisons to Power Stone, Super Smash Bros. and Ehrgeiz as a result. The video game is also based on the Marvel Comic book series with the same name, namely a 6-issue miniseries. The miniseries does not depict the events in the game or vice versa, and has a completely different story than the video game. There are even points in the video game story and the comic books that directly contradict each other. The comic does however star the same characters as the video game and introduces the EA characters with, aside from one or two minor details, the same background stories and powers. The EA characters are said to be part of the regular Marvel continuity but due to the games' poor response and the fact that they're owned by Electronic Arts, they have only appeared in the above mentioned miniseries and will probably never be heard of in the Marvel Universe again.

A sequel has been announced for release in 2007 [1].

[edit] Story

(The following is quoted from IGN.com)

Niles Van Roekel was a top level scientist in his alien world. A highly respected academic, and a patriot, Roekel proudly served his people. He was a leading authority in the areas of DNA research, sociology, biology, and art - he was the Leonardo Da Vinci of his race.

Over the last few decades Niles Van Roekel undertook monumental steps to acquire a facility on Earth, the necessary equipment, and test subjects needed to create the ultimate army. With a secret lab deep below the streets of New York (right under the humans' noses) Roekel began recruiting - usually by abducting his test subjects.

Roekel's first works failed, as frightening genetic mutations often led to the host's horrific death. When a new plan was implemented, Solara, Johnny Ohm, Hazmat, Brigade, Fault Zone, and The Wink were all recruited. They were considered imperfect works in progress but still deemed highly successful in the long term scheme. Finally, development of the warrior Paragon went into effect. She was successfully fused with the alien symbiote and the ultimate weapon was created."

Now it is up to Marvel's greatest heroes to stop Roekel from invading all of Earth with his "perfect" weapon, Paragon!

[edit] Criticism

While the game was still in development, it was first identified as Marvel vs. EA. This quickly drew comparisons to the Marvel vs. Capcom series, mostly negative due to EA's general lack of independent properties and original characters, compared to Capcom's numbers of original franchises which they used for their own intercompany collaborations such as the previously mentioned MvC.

After its initial release, Marvel Nemesis received numerous below average scores, and was derided as a failure by many magazines and websites. Some of the complaints were overly simplistic controls, poor AI, bland character roster, poorly designed original characters, extreme difficulty, bad camera problems, bad graphics, and seemingly pointless missions, among others.

According to Game Informer's 'Loose Talk' section (issue 162, October 2006), EA is planning to make a sequel to Marvel Nemesis. Nihilistic Software will apparently not be involved, and the project will be handled by EA Chicago, the studio behind the Fight Night franchise and Def Jam: Icon. Marvel Nemisis 2 is scheduled for its release on Next-Gen consoles in 2007.
