Robert B. Lewis Stakes

The Robert B. Lewis Stakes is a American Thoroughbred horse race held annually at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California. Prior to 2007, it was known as the Santa Catalina Stakes. It is a race for three-year olds and serves as a prep race for the Kentucky Derby. The race is 1 1/16th miles (8.5 furlongs) long and held on dirt. It is a Grade II Stakes race with a purse of $200,000.
The race is named for Robert B. Lewis (May 12, 1924 - February 17, 2006) who along with his wife, Beverly, were owners of several famous thoroughbreds throughout the 1990s and 2000s. Among the horses the Lewises owned were Silver Charm (1997 Kentucky Derby and [Preakness]] winner), Charismatic (1999 Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner), Timber Country (1995 Preakness winner) and Commendable (2000 Belmont Stakes winner). The Lewises also campaigned six Eclipse champions and won three Breeders' Cup races. Lewis and his wife also earned the Eclipse Award of Merit in 1997 for their support and personal commitment to thoroughbred racing.
