Ronald Gene Davis (born August 6, 1955 Houston, TX) was a pitcher with an 11 year career from 1978 to 1988. He played for the New York Yankees, Minnesota Twins both of the American League and the Chicago Cubs, Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants all of the National League.
At 6' 4" tall he was a hard throwing right handed relief pitcher. During his career he appeared in 481 games all in relief and recorded 130 saves.
Originally drafted by the Chicago Cubs, he was traded while still in the minor leagues to the New York Yankees in 1978. While in New York he was given the opportunity to become the team's closer after the injury to All-Star relief pitcher Rich Gossage. In April 1982 he was traded to the Minnesota Twins along with Greg Gagne in exchange for Roy Smalley. Among Twins fans his name is still synonymous with ineffective relief pitching, this despite finishing in the top 5 for saves in the American League in three of his four seasons with the team.
Davis struck out the last hitter (John Shelby) he faced in his major league career.
He was selected to the American League All-Star team in 1981.
