[edit] Biography
Ron Sparks began his career in comedy at York University as a member of the Vanier Improv Company, under the tutelage of Fredrick H. Thury. With other members of the improv group, Sparks helped found the sketch troupes The Gazebo Pals and The Minnesota Wrecking Crew, who have been nominated for four straight Best Sketch Troupe Canadian Comedy Awards from 2003-2006, winning in 2003 and 2004. The MWC also won the Best Taped Live Performance CCA in 2006.
While working as a sketch performer, Ron began to work the door for the ALTdot COMedy Lounge at The Rivoli in Toronto, eventually trying stand-up comedy himself in 2003. Within months he won the prestigious Tim Sims Award and then the Best Stand-up Newcomer Canadian Comedy Award.
In all, Ron has won five Canadian Comedy Awards (Best Sketch Troupe, "The Minnesota Wrecking Crew", 2003-2004; Best Stand-up Newcomer, 2004; Best One Person Show, 2005; Best Taped Live Performance, The Minnesota Wrecking Crew, 2006) and the 2003 Tim Sims Encouragement Fund Award (Toronto's most promising new comedy act).
He is a writer for CBC's This Hour Has 22 Minutes and also recorded a series of shorts for The Comedy Network entitled From the Desk of Ron Sparks, in which he wrote gag letters to companies.
