Sanjō (三条市; -shi) is a city located in Niigata, Japan. The city has a Jōetsu Shinkansen stop at Tsubame-Sanjo (燕三条)Station.

[edit] The former city
As of 2003, the city has an estimated population of 83,845 and the density of 1,105.70 persons per km². The total area is 75.83 km².
The city was founded on January 1, 1934.

The current city of Sanjo was founded on May 1, 2005 when the former city of Sanjo itself merged with the munis of Sakae and Shitada (both from Minamikanbara District).
The post-creation Sanjo now has an estimated population of 104,748. The total area is now 432.01km². (both data as of October 1, 2005)
