I am an administrator here on English Wikipedia. That means I work for you! If there's anything at all I can help with, please leave a message on my talk page. (I'll reply on yours, unless you request otherwise.)
You can also email me; I generally prefer to communicate on-wiki, so only do this for matters where on-wiki communication would be undesirable for some reason.
If you need administrator help very quickly, please see:
- Wikipedia:Requests for administrator attention for general info on where to make requests
- Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/3RR to report three-revert rule violations
- Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism to report repeated, warned vandalism

[edit] About me
|
||
|
I'm a graduate student in experimental particle physics at the University of California, Berkeley; I sometimes work in Berkeley and sometimes at CERN in Switzerland. I originally intended to write only about stuff I have direct personal experience with or know a lot about, for example the ATLAS experiment, of which I am a member. I have now defined myself to know at least enough about many areas of particle physics that don't need highly-quantitative explanations. Plus I edit other stuff, when I feel like it, although I always keep track of my own limitations and respect experts on a subject.
I've sometimes muddled a bit the process of Wikipedia policymaking. It's usually a big mess, with contentious arguments whose usual result is defaulting to the status quo, but I think it's worth doing anyway. For example, there are some schools I don't think are notable, but I will never nominate one for deletion because I know that there's no consensus to do so; at the same time, I may vote to delete a particular school someone else nominated, if that's what I genuinely believe is appropriate. Not creating arguments is one thing, but arguments that others have started in good faith should be dealt with in good faith as well.
From time to time I try to focus primarily on adding content. It's too easy to let administrative details take up all my time, but that's ultimately not what Wikipedia's about. Unfortunately, I have a pattern of failing conspicuously at this goal—at the moment, most of my edits relate to improving the Wikipedia:Reference desk by modifying the culture there.
[edit] Just curious about who you are....
I just would like to know why such an intelligent, highly educated person such as yourself would waste time with petty arguments on Wikipedia. I mean after all it seems that your plate is full with physics and other such ventures. Who are you, what is your degree in, do you believe that money is the root of all that is evil? Does Vanity disgust you, does pretentious nature disgust you as well. I am just a curious sentient being that would love to hear what an accredited person has to say in rebuttal.... — An Anon
- I'm not 100% sure what you're referring to, but I'll answer your questions as best I can. I've said all I care to say about who I am on my user page, but I am happy to tell you that the degrees I've obtained thus far are in Physics (BA, MA) and Mathematics (BS). I'm working on my PhD in physics. I believe money is a useful medium of exchange, and I think vanity and pretension are things we should all strive to avoid. Spending time on Wikipedia is my hobby, partially because I'm interested in educating the public but mostly because I just think it's fun—sometimes, as you note, this unfortunately involves petty arguments. -- SCZenz 13:21, 15 January 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Thoughts on patience and civility
- Do you ever look at a talk page note that you've taken some time to write, carefully rebutting some preposterous statement someone made, and then decide that it will make things worse than simply keeping your mouth shut and scrap it? If not, perhaps you should try it.
- When you leave warnings, or tell someone a rule they've broken, or block someone... is it enough for them to do better next time, or do you secretly want them to respect your authority?
- Sometimes you have to take a stand, without certain backing, because it's the right thing to do. The more careful you are about doing it, and the more infrequently, the better it will work.

[edit] Works in progress
- List of accelerators in particle physics - a very ambitious list, still missing some easy entries and (no doubt) many obscure ones
- /Addition to reference desk header that I'm not putting in quite yet
[edit] Articles I intend to make changes to
- Add detail on experimental production/measurement - Higgs boson, Top quark
- Cleanup - Potential energy
- Meson - simplify intro

[edit] Things I'm proud of
- I wrote most of ATLAS experiment, it was made a featured article and was on the Main Page on November 25, 2005. Harvard professor Lubos Motl praised it in his blog.
- Being trusted with adminship.
- Doing my part to defend the Wiki in this newspaper article from the Contra Costa Times.
- Officially becoming a rouge admin

To coordinate numbers, the previous blanking 2, 3, and 4 templates have been moved because they were out of sync with the numbering usage with other templates. The old templates, though not listed, can still be used as they redirect to the new name and number.
The numbering system being used across the templates is simple:
- 0. Good faith edit
- 1. General note
- 2. Could be seen as vandalism
- 3. Warning to stop
- 4. Final warning
- 5. Blocked
- 6. Blocked plus severe warning
If you are creating new templates, please follow the numbers above, even if you are not creating templates using all the numbers. That way, by using the right number, users will be able to know automatically what category of message the template refers to.

A pile of saffron threads (each about 20 mm in length) from Iran. Saffron is a spice derived from the flower of the saffron crocus and is among the world's costliest spices by weight. In Western countries, the average retail price is $2200/€1550/£1100 per kilogram ($1,000/€700/£500 per pound). Besides its use as a seasoning, it has also used in its history as fragrance, dye, and medicine. Photo credit: Rainer Zenz |
