Born on November 2nd 1966 in Cleveland, Ohio to Arnold Kanan (a pianist) and Margaret Kanan (a costume designer), he was an only child.

He started on soap operas playing the role of Alan "A.J." Quartermaine Jr. on the ABC soap General Hospital in January 1993. In June 1997, he left the soap to pursue other opportunities. In August 1999, he was offered the role of Jude Cavanaugh on NBC's Sunset Beach until the show was cancelled on New Year's Eve of that year.

He joined the cast as Deacon Sharpe on The Bold and the Beautiful from November 2000 until his final appearance in February 2005. Sean is perhaps best known for his portrayal of "Karate's bad boy" and "tournament terror", Mike Barnes, in The Karate Kid, Part III. He was lauded by critics for the severe beatings he administered to Ralph Macchio's character. [verification needed]

Sean also currently appears as a judge on the "MTV's Little Talent Show". He has one daughter, Simone Andrea, from a relationship with former The Bold and the Beautiful co-star Gladys Jimenez (ex-Carmen), he was an guest star on MTV's Little Talent Show.

Sean lives in Italy where he is currently a contestant on the TV show Ballando con le stelle, the Italian version of Dancing with the Stars.
