Shagor, or Al-Shaghur (Hebrew: שגור, Arabic: الشاغور) is a city in the North District of Israel. It was formed in 2003 with the merger of three Arab local councils Majd al-Krum, Deir al-Asad and Bi'ina. It was declared a city in 2005.
According to the Israel Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS), the city had a population of 27,800 at the end of 2004.
[edit] History
The three villages like other Arab villages in the Galilee were laregely agricultural. The main crops were the orchards of olives, figs, citrus and pomegranates.Majd al-Krum, Deir al-Asad and al-Bi'ina were captured by Israel on Oct. 30 during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. Palestinian poet Mahmud Darwish was temporarily educated in Deir al-Asad. This part of town also provided sanctuary to Uri Davis for a year while he was evading army service. A large percentage of land from the Shaghur villages was confiscated by Israel to form the nearby city of Karmiel.[citation needed]
[edit] Demographics
The city has a mostly Muslim and Arab population with a few Christian residents in the Bi'ina area. Most residents did not flee the city's neighborhoods during al-Nakba. The city seems somewhat divided due to the lack of cooperation between the two major areas of Majd al-Krum and Deir al-Asad. As a result after recent elections for city mayor, a Deir al-Asad resident was victorious. The residents of Majd al-Krum boycotted the elections and the area now finds itself at an economic and social disadvantage to the other city neighborhoods.
