Shariff Kabunsuan is a province of the Philippines carved out of the ten towns comprising the first district of the province of Maguindanao. It is the country’s 80th province and the sixth in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao. It is the first province not made by Congress, as it was made through invoking the powers of Republic Act No. 9054 or the Expanded ARMM law.
Voters in Maguindanao’s 29 municipalities have approved the creation of the province. Of Maguindanao’s more than 500,000 registered voters, 285,372 favored the creation of Shariff Kabunsuan. Only 8,802 voted against it.

The province is named after Shariff Mohammed Kabungsuwan, an Arab-Malay Islamic preacher who introduced Islam to central Mindanao in the 16th century.
