[edit] Biography
Born in 1978 as a son of amateur flautist Shri Subramanyam, Shashank was a child prodigy. His talents were recognised early and allowed to blossom. Shashank was trained as a vocal carnatic singer under teachers such as Shri R.K Srikantan. Shashank’s genius allowed him to reproduce what he learnt on his flute.
[edit] Performances
Shashank made his stage debut at a tender age of 12 in Adelaide, Australia. Reviews of his initial concerts suggested that Shashank was a great musician in the making. He quickly proved it and went on to perform in all parts of the world.
[edit] Style
Shashank’s main style is Carnatic classical. He is the first Carnatic flautist to bring Hindustani music also into his concerts. Shashank uses a range of flutes to cover octaves that are not supported by the traditional carnatic flute. Shashank is well known for his intricate and intense aalaapanas, melodious keerthana renditions and pulsating kalpanaswaras. His concerts include a Ragam Tanam Pallavi as a central piece, which is normally composed by Shashank himself under the mudra Shashankirunal. Shashank expresses his musical genius so well on the flute that it is often said that Shashank does not play the flute; he sings through it.
