Shimbulak

Shimbulak (kz: Шымбұлак) is an Olympic ski area located in eastern Kazakhstan in the outskirts of Almaty, which is the largest city in Kazakhstan. The ski resort is located right on the Alatau Mountains which are part of the Tian Shan mountain range bordering Kyrgryzstan and China.
Medeo ice skating rink is also located near Shimbulak. Medeo is about 15 minutes below the ski resort by car above a giant dam to block avalanches. Both areas are being considered to hold the winter olympics possibly in 2018 in Almaty, since the bid has been denied for the 2014 Winter Olympics.
At Shimbulak, there are 3 lifts to get to the very top of the resort. It costs 3000TГ Tenge ($24.10 USD) to go on the ski lifts for the day and 4000TГ Tenga ($32.18) to rent skis.
