Snowspeeder
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Incom T-47 Snowspeeder is a 2 person vehicle from the Star Wars universe. It is featured most prominently in the motion picture Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, where a group of Rebel Alliance fighter pilots attempt to defend Echo Base on the ice planet of Hoth from invading Imperial forces.
The name "snowspeeder" is somewhat of a misnomer: the vehicle is actually a modified T-47 Airspeeder (the true name of the vehicle), designed to accomodate the cold climates of Hoth.
The Snowspeeder is designed for low atmospheric flight, powered by a pair of repulsorlift drive units and high powered afterburners. it also sports brake flaps for easier turning. they can reach 1000 kph, with an effective combat speed of 600. Although it lacks shielding, the snowspeeder sports heavy armor plating, as well as twin laser cannons.
with its small size and high speed, the Snowspeeder functioned as a sort of atmosheric A-Wing.
A toy Snowspeeder was released in 1980 as part of the original Kenner series of Star Wars toys and action figures. An electronic redesign was released in 1995 in the later Kenner toy line, "Star Wars: The Power of the Force," that was issued in anticipation of the theatrical re-release of the original Star Wars trilogy. Micro Machines and LEGO versions were also sold.
