Southern France

Southern France, colloquially known as "Le Midi" is a loosely defined geographical area consisting of the regions that border Spain, the Mediterranean Sea and Italy. They include:
- And Canal du Midi, a world heritage site, runs through it.
Linguistically these regions could be defined by the opposition of the "langue d'oïl" (northern France), versus "langue d'oc" (called Occitan), which was spoken in the southern regions. However, this is now a historical construction, as Occitan is seldom spoken as a first language in modern France.
