Spatial Sciences Institute

The Spatial Sciences Institute is the voice and the place for spatial information professionals.
The Spatial Sciences Institute (SSI) is the globally recognised forum for the spatial information community within the Asia-Pacific region. The SSI leads, promotes and advocates on behalf of its members. The Institute is the body of choice for all professionals and practitioners who, although distributed by geography, are joined by their common participation in the spatial sciences.
The spatial sciences are inherent in many professions. From the traditional practices of surveying and cartography to the more recent practices using GPS, remote sensing and GIS. The spatial sciences share the common needs — to capture, manage, analyse or manipulate information that can be referenced to a location.
Information that can be related to a location is termed spatial information. Though predominately perceived as geo (earth) related, spatial information can range from the anatomic to astronomic scale, from the real to the abstract entity, over any time period. The principles of place and the technologies that reference location are transferable across professions and common to many disciplines.
Governments, businesses and individuals rely on the spatial sciences for the fundamental spatial infrastructures that support the economic, social and environmental security, health and vitality of their communities. In responding to that need, the SSI provides leadership, promotes the capabilities of the spatial sciences, and advocates strongly on behalf of its members.
The Spatial Sciences Institute is a not-for-profit professional body (incorporated in 2003) with headquarters in Canberra, Australia. As of September 2006 its membership was over 3,400 individuals, government agencies and corporate businesses throughout the Asia-Pacific region and growing strongly. Its culture is inclusive, with membership demographics currently spanning the disciplines of surveying, information technology, town planning, cartography, archeology, the emerging spatial information (GPS, remote sensing and GIS) professions and others. As the spatial industry evolves, the representation of the Institute grows. The Institute publishes the bi-annual Journal of Spatial Science and numerous other Regional/State based publications and newsletters for both its members and others involved in the spatial industry.
