SRM Institute of Science and Technology is an Engineering College located some 50 km from Chennai, South India. Previously functioning under the Anna University, as the SRM Engineering College, the Institute gained the Deemed status in 2003-04, and was renamed. The Institution is also ISO 9001:2000 certified. It is no longer affiliated with AICTE, because it argues that Deemed to be Universities do not require it. However it has promised that it will abide by any court orders.

[edit] The Origins
The beginnings of the college can be traced back to 1969, when the Valliammai Society started a primary school (Florence Nightingale School, now the SRM Nightingale School). Later in 1984, they set up the Valliammai Polytechnic. It was only in 1985 that the SRM Engineering College was set up. SRMIST (SRM Institute of Science and Technology) is not the only Institution under th The Group also has investments in SRM Hospital, Geetha Constructions, Royal Southern Hotels, SRM Printers, SRM Benefit Fund Ltd., SRM Systems and Software, SRM Easwari Travels and Tours India(P) Ltd., Blossom Infotech.

Considering the fact that the Institution is a private one, the campus is huge and the Infrastructure is excellent and well maintained. Other than the Institutions itself, there are two banks (The Indian Bank ATM included,The City Union Bank ATM included), a 3-Star Hotel (the Royal Southern), and the Royal Inn Restaurant. The various blocks within the SRMIST include, the PG Block, the Hi-Tech Block, the Main Block, the Mechanical Block, the Mech PG Block, the Electrical Sciences Block, the Computer Science Block,the Biotech block, a Library with an Internet Cafe as well. There are also about half a dozen hostels, some of them are the K.R.S Hostel (only for the first year boys), the UG Hostel, the PG Hostel, Meenaksi Women's Hostel, International Hostel (an airconditioned hostel). The atmosphere in the campus too is a bit different compared to other colleges in South India.
A decent, recently air conditioned, computerized general library, latest copier machines and good computer labs are the hallmarks of this place. Most of the computers here have flat screen TFT panels are than the old CRT monitors. An "Apple Lab" is also available which has 30-35 latest models of the iMac computers and one Power Mac.

Immediately after the Institute gained Deemed University status in 2003-04,the Insitute took students on the basis of merit through the AIEEE (All India Engineering Entrance Examinations).However from the year 2005-06 the Institute started its own All India Examination, the SRMISTEEE (SRM Institute of Science and Technology Engineering Entrance Examinations).

The college was considered among the better ones in and around Chennai while it was under the Anna University, on an average 2-3 students from each branch getting university ranks & still it competes to farewell after being awarded the Deemed to be University status. One of the main reasons why the college is more successful in attracting students than its counterparts is the fact that almost 90% of the students that applied for placement were placed in the On-Campus Interviews. Companies that visit the campus regularly are Wipro, Infosys, TCS, Xansa, HCL, Mahindra&Mahindra, Ford, Alstom, Siemens, Motorola

The SRMIST, is in Kanchipuram district, is located on the NH-45 linking Chennai and Trichy,about 15 km from Tambaram.For students from in and around Chennai, the Institution has the provision of Buses. Right on the other side of NH-45 lies the Potheri suburban railway station,which serves the Institute.

The university is approved by the UGC (University Grants Commission) accreditation and that the students will have the same opportunities as that of colleges under AICTE. Also the college has recently been suffixed with a NAAC accreditation, which adds much more value to the students. Also the student staff ratio is maintained at a much better standard compared to ANNA UNIVERSITY.There is also an nano tech research centre.
